When I was 16 and into NGE I hated Asukara at first because she was annoying and bossy and I identified more with Shinji. But then I realized my bad attitudes were reflected in her and that's why I hated her. The series also helped me to realize that later on I was struggling with heavy depression so I'm always thankful for that, even if I don't heavily identify with Shinji or Asuka anymore, that and the series as a whole has a lot of nuanced characters to identify with on some level and I appreciate that.
