So this might be my ESL thing speaking, but doesn't identifying with a character not necessarily mean they have to be like you? They can be the complete opposite, but you can identify with them because of their situation/struggles/something. Or you only identify with one aspect?


As I said maybe I don't understand this right.

I don't think it's an ESL thing. That's my understanding of the term too.

I agree. I think it can be a variety of things. It can be because they're "like" you in the sense that they have similar values, traits, or demeanor, or even appearance might play into it. It can also mean that you've had similar experiences, similar relationships, similar thinking patterns, ways of handling situations, ways of being affected by things, etc.

Oh good, I was thinking I'd just used the term wrong all this time. Glad to know if I have been, I'm not the only one.
