sure but at the same time, that entire song was set up to show us that Belle was ostracized by the town (they call her "funny" about 80 times)

it's not black and white though I mean obviously the bookshop guy liked her.

eta: but if people are really villainizing the bread guy because he didn't listen to her recap of jack and the beanstalk then I agree that's pretty dumb

Ostracized is a little strong. I thought the song was about how she didn't fit in, and people didn't quite understand her. They're puzzled, but benevolent about it. Pretty much every one seemed to like her, save maybe Gaston's jealous fanclub girls. Her thirst for new experiences comes from living the mundane every day of a small town, not a need to escape a society that mistreats her.

"It's a pity and a sin she doesn't quite fit in"

And then there's the whole town showing up for the plot to put Maurice away so Gaston can marry Belle. Yeah, not ostracized my ass.

To be fair, if it's a small farming town and someone was about to get hauled away to the asylum, then...yeah, it probably wouldn't matter who, they'd just show up to watch. Not a lot of entertainment. I don't think the Town of Easily Lead Folks knew that Gaston was using it as a part of his plan.

(Yes, it was obvious. But it was also obvious that Gaston was a massive jerk, and that didn't stop anyone.)

...Yes. Liked her. That's why they called her strange, called her dazed and distracted, pretty much insulted her like for books, and happily joined Gaston to throw her father into the madhouse so she'd marry their town hero.

I still say the bookshop guy is the Fairy in disguise. A bookshop? In a "poor provincial town?" Where people find reading for pleasure to be odd? In that era? That's doing so well the owner can just lend books out instead of selling them to someone who would be his best (only?) customer? And just...gives them to her if she really really likes them?

Nah. It's the Fairy, giving her a steady diet of appropriate stories to make her ready to go help Beast learn his lesson before it's too late.
