My thoughts are that Belle's mother was independently wealthy/had family money and Belle was raised in the city in luxury. Then classic Disney parent death, Maurice and Belle couldn't stand living there any longer (everything reminds them of her), so they move out to the countryside for a change of scenery. Cue start of movie, where Belle dislikes the provincial town and taking care of chickens when she's used to museums and theaters and libraries and high culture.
...Sorry. That was probably more than was asked for.

it's not black and white though I mean obviously the bookshop guy liked her.
eta: but if people are really villainizing the bread guy because he didn't listen to her recap of jack and the beanstalk then I agree that's pretty dumb

Nah. It's the Fairy, giving her a steady diet of appropriate stories to make her ready to go help Beast learn his lesson before it's too late.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)Also I highly doubt her father is rich, he's just invented enough things to make chores easier for them

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)So she turns away, rolling her eyes, all like: "if you didn't wanna know, why'd you bother asking?"
I don't think it was meant to reflect badly on either one of them, but I DO think it was demonstrating that Belle is on a totally different wavelength as the rest of the town. If she barged in on him while he was trying to work, that would be one thing, but that's not what happened: he started a polite but utterly meaningless and uninterested conversation. That's why she felt left out: because even the nice folk don't really care what she has to say.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 02:38 am (UTC)(link)But it seems like she doesn't care what *they* have to say, either.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)Why the fuck would you think her dad is rich?

Obviously it's a cartoon, and we do not delve into the private lives of side characters very much, but to me her whole point of isolation was that she had imagination/thirst for knowledge while ohers did not, which is a really frustrating position to be in.
And those are not traits unique to non-working people.
Also chiming in with the people who are saying her dad was not rich.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 02:56 am (UTC)(link)"Look there she goes
The girl is strange, no question
Dazed and distracted, can't you tell?
Never part of any crowd
Cause her head's up on some cloud
No denying she's a funny girl, that Belle"
"Look, there she goes, that girl is so peculiar
I wonder if she's feeling well?
With a dreamy, far-off look
And her nose stuck in a book
What a puzzle to the rest of us is Belle"
"Now it's no wonder that her name means "beauty"
Her looks have got no parallel
But behind that fair facade
I'm afraid she's rather odd
Very different from the rest of us
She's nothing like the rest of us
Yes, different from the rest of us is Belle"
"Look there she goes, a girl who's strange but special
A most peculiar mademoiselle
It's a pity and a sin
She doesn't quite fit in
Cause she really is a funny girl
A beauty but a funny girl
She really is a funny girl, that Belle!"
Yup, totally completely harmless commentary, and they can take time out to stare but not talk when ASKING her something.
