I can't believe I'm commenting on something so insignificant to the film as a whole, but if memory serves, the BAKER starts the conversation by saying "where are you off to?" and she excitedly says that she's going to the bookshop and begins to explain why, at which point he just blows her off.

So she turns away, rolling her eyes, all like: "if you didn't wanna know, why'd you bother asking?"

I don't think it was meant to reflect badly on either one of them, but I DO think it was demonstrating that Belle is on a totally different wavelength as the rest of the town. If she barged in on him while he was trying to work, that would be one thing, but that's not what happened: he started a polite but utterly meaningless and uninterested conversation. That's why she felt left out: because even the nice folk don't really care what she has to say.

Yeah, this was my impression of things. The baker isn't supposed to be mean or anything, but the conversation with him shows that she doesn't really have others around to share her interests with.

Isn't it the case that, usually, when people say something "where are you off to", or any other variation on a "what's up?" sort of theme, they usually don't actually care all that much about the answer, and are just being friendly and polite?

Belle is starved for social interaction.

because even the nice folk don't really care what she has to say.

But it seems like she doesn't care what *they* have to say, either.

She does up until they dismiss her or... Start talking like Gaston.

"LMAO u read? But then you'll get IDEAS."

Go away Gaston.
