...Because people who work never read?

Obviously it's a cartoon, and we do not delve into the private lives of side characters very much, but to me her whole point of isolation was that she had imagination/thirst for knowledge while ohers did not, which is a really frustrating position to be in.

And those are not traits unique to non-working people.

Also chiming in with the people who are saying her dad was not rich.

Not to mention, he merrily asked where she was going, and as soon as she happily began talking about going to the bookstore, he stopped caring. And everyone in the town sees her as weird and literally says "it's a pity and a sin she isn't like us."

Hell, they all show up later to support Gaston in locking up her father so their hero will get married.

I think the underlying attitude is that reading is a frivolous luxury for the privileged, that people who have to earn their bread in the sweat of their brows don't waste their time with.
