Yeeeah, you're gonna have to back that up with a citation, because as far as the field of psychology is concerned, there absolutely is such a thing as a sociopath, and sociopathy, as a disorder, is distinct from psychopathy.

I'm told that as far as the field of psychology is concerned, neither is a valid diagnosis. Sociopath is generally taken to mean someone with antisocial personality disorder, while psychopath is... even less a valid diagnosis? More than a personality disorder.

Yeah, neither "sociopathy" nor "psychopathy" is a DSM diagnosis nor disorder. As concepts they are talked about, usually in connection with Antisocial Personality Disorder, but neither is a disorder, and definitions of both and distinctions between them are not concrete.

lol @ "the field of psychology"

Because it's a completely (or even mostly) unified field... (hint: it isn't). Regarding psychopathy, sociopathy, antisocial personality disorder etc, there is no commonly agreed upon definition. There just isn't. And diagnostic manuals vary from country to country, so even the much quoted DSM isn't the word of god as far as the "field of psychology" is concerned.

Sociopath was the term that was originally used back in the 50s (I think?), when the theory was that they are a result of social conditioning & bad parenting. sociopath = society/socialization

Psychopath is the more recent term, which refers to the more recent focus on cognitive & environmental causes. psychopath = psyche

According to the field of psychology, these kinds of people DO exist, but under the Antisocial Personality Disorder spectrum, or the Narcissistic Personality Disorder spectrum. (Someone who is a psychopath will likely have antisocial and narcissistic personality traits.)

Psychopath is NOT used as a psychological term, but a LEGAL one. (And, of course, in popular culture.) Sociopath isn't even used as a legal term anymore, as far as I'm aware.
