Sociopath was the term that was originally used back in the 50s (I think?), when the theory was that they are a result of social conditioning & bad parenting. sociopath = society/socialization

Psychopath is the more recent term, which refers to the more recent focus on cognitive & environmental causes. psychopath = psyche

According to the field of psychology, these kinds of people DO exist, but under the Antisocial Personality Disorder spectrum, or the Narcissistic Personality Disorder spectrum. (Someone who is a psychopath will likely have antisocial and narcissistic personality traits.)

Psychopath is NOT used as a psychological term, but a LEGAL one. (And, of course, in popular culture.) Sociopath isn't even used as a legal term anymore, as far as I'm aware.
