See, I believe the stuff about his past. It's everything else I'm suspicious about. I'm not saying he's lying but... Having a few series you know nothing about? Fine. Having some things you only know a few things about? Also fine. But I can't help but eye him sideways when he claims to know absolutely nothing about literally every even remotely popular thing.

Yeah, I find him far too quick to jump on the most popular bandwagons, especially Supernatural, to be so limited in knowledge. Not to mention, he said upfront that he knows there's "a gay angel or something" but then acted SHOCKED AND AMAZED that maybe heaven could be a thing and that Lucifer existed.

If it was just one or two series, or if he knew bits and pieces more often, that I would buy. I'm even willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, I'm sure there are lots of things he hasn't watched or read before, and he doesn't know much about it. But I don't believe anyone lives under that big a rock that they know NOTHING about EVERYTHING. I think he picks shows that are popular and he probably doesn't know much, but it's more fun to the readers to think he knows even less. I don't think it's malicious, but I don't think it's entirely true either. I also think some of his predictions are too spot on.

But he's such a nice guy. Even anonymous I feel bad saying this, which is why there's so many occasions of BUT I'M SURE HE'S NOT TRYING TO LIE HE JUST WANTS TO BE FUN. I am bad at fandom secrets.

Oh god completely this. It's a schtick now, it feels completely fake - both in the sense of being ~~~UNPREPARED~~~ as you mention, and also in what his reactions are. It feels insincere. Part of the fun of Mark Reads Harry Potter for me was that it felt really spontaneous - probably because it started off with him thinking he would hate it and snark about it the whole way through and slowly falling in love with it and actually being unprepared. And it feels like now he just has his Thing which is that he needs to respond the same way to everything no matter what and it's just exhausting.

If I had a dollar for every time some variation of "NOPE FOREVER!" and "THAT IS 1000 PERCENT NOT OKAY!!!" were used, I would be a rich rich man.

Yeah, this is my issue as well. Either he's lying or he has little to no actual interest in pop culture. The first one makes him a bad person, the second one -- well, why would I want to read thousands of words written by someone who's not really interested in any of this?
