I'm actually wondering how it is ppl are so against this show, like, i don't think it's necessarily /bad/, boring? yeah. cliched? yeah. poorly written? def. poorly acted? sometimes, but i think they're getting better at it.

but i think some of the things that are being used in the show are interesting. i dunno i'd rather watch an ensemble cast with different personalities and motivations than tony stark do anything even for a second. but i guess i'm in the minority there.

i also wonder exactly which episodes ppl have seen, because much as i love this stupid show there are quite a few absolutely terribad eps (Pilot, The Asset, Girl in the Flower Dress, and The Well stand out. esp. the pilot.) but i think some eps were pretty good, or at least interesting - 0-8-4, F.Z.Z.T, Repairs, and Eye Spy.

but something i can admit to is not liking certain characters. I mean hell, it took me 6 episodes to like Skye and I've only just warmed up to Ward, a fondness that i expect will soon vanish again. Much as I adore Coulson, he doesn't make the show watchable just by himself for me. If it weren't for Melinda May and Fitzimmons I would've dropped the show by ep 3.

btw, if anyone's gonna respond to this don't waste time by saying how awful the show is and that it's a waste and what a shame, blah blah. that's boring, and we've heard it over and over since week one.

Heh, me too -- I've only now started to like Skye, but now I like her a lot. Ward NEVER grew on me, and maybe he will, but maybe not. Still enjoy AoS.

Honestly, there's something slightly refreshing / comfortable to me about characters I like but don't LOVE. Less risk of heartbreak, or something. It's an enjoyable ensemble cast that doesn't burden me too much with feels. I think there's a place for that in the world. My world, anyway.

And I don't hate Tony Stark, but I wouldn't watch The Tony Stark Show, either.

I'm actually wondering how it is ppl are so against this show... boring? yeah. cliched? yeah. poorly written? def. poorly acted? sometimes...

And I'm wondering how you could write the above lines and be confused on this point. :-) I mean, if a show is boring, cliched, poorly written, and (sometimes) poorly acted, that's generally more than enough reason for me to dislike it.

Though actually I do think there are two additional factors to consider:

1) Disappointed expectations. On paper, the show had a lot going for it, and people were upset when reality failed to meet their expectations in any way.

2) There are a lot of people who feel compelled to watch the show so that they can participate in the MCU fandom as a whole: they're invested in the shared storyline and occasional crossovers between the show and the films, or they read and/or write fanfic and want the background knowledge, or etc. Speaking personally, if Agents of SHIELD weren't part of the MCU, I'd have dropped it long ago. So you have a situation where a bunch of people feel a bit like hostages to a show they dislike, and that just increases their (our) resentment and frustration when the show itself isn't worth watching.

#2 is exactly how I feel. It's canon and it's telling us a lot about the structure of SHIELD itself that didn't make it into Avengers. Some of it I like and some I don't, but at the end of the day, when I want to write MCU fic I feel like there's stuff I HAVE to know. Especially with the way they're talking about how it fits into Cap2.
solarbird: boring bit (boring bit)

I just think its politics are really shitty.

[personal profile] solarbird 2014-03-27 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
And i'm not even referring to the racial and gender politics, I mean its political politics. It sold out its supposedly principled characters on the cheap by episode, what, five? To hell with that.

Oh definitely, the bullshit racism and sexism need to knock it the fuck off. And tbh I pretty much push The Girl With the Flower Dress out of my mind bc I hated that episode so fucking much.

But referring to that review, I've personally never seen SHIELD as the "good guys", but obviously YMMV. I've always seen them as a shady "Big Brother" type of group, like well-intentioned extremists. And they killed Scorch not because he didn't hide well enough, but because they didn't think to bring anything other than tranquilizer rounds (which is short-sighted) but more importantly he was killing people, and would likely have posed a threat to many others had they not taken him down. Besides that though, yeah I agree with the review.

Oh, yeah. Its politics have been completely horrible from the start, but I guess I expected that from a show about SHIELD.

I expected SHIELD's politics to be really shitty, sure. They are. But I thought the show would at least be nuanced - yep, they're shitty, but they think they have reasons, and meanwhile, all these opposition figures are serious, not frauds too stupid to know any better. But no.

I know just what you mean. I tend to mentally jam a lot of extra nuance into things that don't actually have any in order to go on enjoying things I probably shouldn't enjoy. But I know the show isn't actually written that way. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
I watch every episode, but sometimes during the show I get bored and start going online or talking to people. And when I look back up at the screen, I didn't miss anything. So, for me, it's the pacing. I find it too slow, overall. I appreciate a heart-to-heart, quiet conversation between two characters out of the ensemble, but there's too much scenery stuff sometimes and just background things (esp with "bad guys") that make me want to fast-forward and "get to the good part already".
