it's gotten to the point for me where i can't really believe that he's been THIS sheltered from basically every single piece of pop culture to the point where he has to loudly proclaim "OH MY GOD GUYS I AM NOT PREPARED THIS DID JUST NOT HAPPEN OH MY GOD THE FEELS AND WHAT IS GOING ON RIGHT NOW I DO NOT QUITE UNDERSTAND" in his reaction bullet points. i like his little analyses from time to time, and i will check out the blog every now and again - especially if he's doing a series I like - but yeah...

(like he's doing colour of magic right now, and nearly every reaction is "*GASP* THIS IS REALLY BIZARRE! I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON" - it's a fucking terry pratchett book - absurd, imaginative/slightly cuckoo humour and storytelling is kind of pratchett's schtick...)

You should try watching his SPN videos. Five minutes in and he's all "I don't understand what's going on?! I don't get it!!"

NOBODY GETS IT. IT'S FIVE MINUTES INTO THE EPISODE. YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO GET IT YET! For the record, I don't buy his videos, but I take a weird bit of glee from snatching them up the free links.

His reactions from the video always felt fake and it bothered me how he'd be actively looking at the camera sometimes, like he was performing because hammy reactions are expected.

oh my god my fucking kingdom for not having to hear goddamned "I AM NOT PREPARED" ever again

Yes! I haven't exactly been keeping up, but his whole OHMYGWD FEELZ!" feels (hah!) very tumblr-esque and very, I don't know... pointless?
I want to read real opinions, not "HOMGGZZ LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS IS!" or plot summary. I would say it feels to me like he's engaging with the texts on a very surface level, but I've been put off his site since he began to read The Protector of the Small. I'm now wondering what he'll do with Emelan (Circle of Magic).

SA

I meant, it wouldn't be fair for me to say he's not engaging with the characters/texts because I've not been keeping up with him lately.

I don't know; it's been a while since I read Mark Reads. But I grew up -- not even super sheltered, jut moderately sheltered, and I related to his excited discovery of pop culture a lot. I knew about more things than he claims to, but I still feel like I'm playing catch-up a lot of the time, and it's fun to get hyper-excited about new things and feelings and everything.

I wonder if this comment outlines why I hate him so deeply? I don't *like* not knowing things; if there were some way I could suck every book, movie, song, TV show or comic anyone would ever reference into my head instantly, I'd do it. Fuck the joy of discovery. To me, that part's tedious, and the fun starts once you understand something enough to have opinions.
