Clearly we have had different experiences. Because nobody has made me feel as worthless as some of the people there except the girls who spent a year of middle school barking at me like I was a dog.

Some of the people there are judgmental assholes and unfortunately some of those people are in charge.

<3 I'm sorry you went through both of those things.

da

Same. I wish it was just squee about the books or whatever, but nope. For me it was a toxic place with awful people who have the honor of being the only online community to ever reduce me to tears.

Oh, that sucks! Seriously? I only followed when he read the HP books and loved the comments for the most part. Were you there during HP or later?

Dog Anon

The HP comments were great! And they were still largely OK when he transitioned over to his own sites, but after awhile of being there and after acquiring moderators from his pool of uberfans...it's like they all got drunk with power and quick to judge.

I think the last ones I read were the Hunger Games which were awhile ago.

I will say, there's a lot of groupthink there (which I sort of get, when a group of people are on the same page about so much--i.e., Harry Potter is awesome--I think people instinctively try to reinforce that cohesiveness). But the constant swipes at Twilight kind of made me cringe. Twilight is certainly shit, I agree, but I still have an affection for it and I thought at least some of his over-the-top "outrage" was easy posturing and playing to the base.

twilight hate is really outdated these days anyway

ayrt

I was there long after the HP era. That looked like a good time! I wish I'd been there for that instead of when I was.

SO much great discussion, so many thoughtful comments. I remember when someone posted exactly what Snape had to do in the boathouse, what was going through his head, what he had to remember, and of course he has to occlude but not *look* like he's occluding so Voldemort doesn't get suspicious and all at this time, he know he's about to die. My mind was blown, I tell you. Someobody was always coming up with something like that, "hey, did you know Merope was the name of a star in the Pleiades--Merope was one of the 7 Sisters who married a mortal so she hid her face in shame" [the Merope star is darker than the others]. SO FUCKING COOL. So many awesome factoids and theories like that. It's all archived on Buzznet, sometimes when I'm rereading I go back.

It really sucks they made you cry, that pisses me off. For God's sake, it's supposed to be fun! That isn't at all like the experience I had,* it sounds like a bunch of new people moved in or sometimes people get weird when they have a tiny bit of power. The website Television Without Pity is shutting down soon, and the mods there are a prime example!

*Although I will say some people got incredibly obnoxious about anything that hinted at spoilers. I mean anything, to the point that a lot of conversation was inhibited. Like people--not all or most but a vocal minority--would come swooping down if, say, early in Prisoner of Azakhaban, someone posted Sirius was one of their favorite characters. "Don't saaaaaaaay that!!!! You're spoiling the big reveal later!!!!" Come on, guys. Tons of villains have fans--to say that an apparently bad character is one of your favorites is not to give away what we learn about Sirius later. Hell, Bellatrix is one of *my* favorites and she's almost as bad as Voldemort! It got very camp counselor-y--it's one thing if Mark or that designated mod (can't remember his name) said something but if you're just another commenter, chill.
