Recent fandom disappointments

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically an excuse to vent, but would love for others to vent with me!

There is a story someone has been working on for awhile and I've really been looking forward to it. It's a fusion fic with a movie I enjoy and thought the fandom characters would fit so well. It finally came out today and I am so disappointed. :( It's basically a transcript of the movie with no recognizable characterization from the fandom characters and nothing actually changed outside the names. I'm about a quarter into it and all I can think is "I'd rather just go and re-watch the movie." So sad.

i'm rewatching lost and i checked out the fics on AO3, and i was disappointed at the size of the fandom. it's so tiny! come on guys, this show was huge when it was on, where are you hiding? i want coffee shop AUs and fix-fit h/c and crack ships and woobie antagonists! don't let me down like this :(

I'm really surprised, because yeah that fandom was huge! I would have just assumed your choices would be wide and varied. But maybe it's a matter of all the fic being on LJ or other places since it's a slightly older fandom?

yeah you're right, i should check out lj, but it's a real pain in the ass to find fic there so i was really hoping there was some elsewhere. damn it, i'm too used to huge fandoms that have 99% of their fic on ao3.

Oh man, tell me about it. I didn't watch Lost til 2011, and the fandom was mostly dead even then. I was so bummed! I generally write for small fandoms though, so I'm used to writing fic into the void - it's still the fandom I've written the most for at AO3.

well i'd like to thank you for contributing, at least. feels good to know there's still someone who cares.
i'm not used to small fandoms and it hurts because i love this show so much :(

all of the ships. like, all of them. i just have favorite characters who i prefer to read about, but really the other half of the ship could be anyone.

(although what i really want to read is cutesy or really smutty ben/sayid or ben/locke, i'm not even ashamed)

I didn't see a huge amount of fic when the show was going on, at least not where I was hanging around on LJ, and it was pretty easy to be the only one writing a pairing, or the only one doing it in a certain way. I've ended up writing the only Ben/Locke longfic there is. I remember tons of people saying after the finale that they were going to write this or that fixit or AU, but the vast majority never ended up doing it. The finale was so divisive that a lot of them just didn't want to stick around, and the rest of canon can be obnoxiously difficult to deal with in fic no matter how non-plotty you do it, especially if you came down on the nope side of that debate. Lots of dead LJ communities, but lost_fanfic, ficinabottle and lost_slash are still around.

Not really anything big or even recent in terms of fandom, but I was watching the tv series "Daria" over again and I really wanted to find a good fic where Daria grows up and she Trent work their way towards ending up together. I couldn't find anything. Mostly one shots that don't do much. They were pretty decent reads, but I still haven't found that one fic where Daria learns to open up a bit more and Trent realistically falls for Daria and works his way toward becoming more responsible.

I'm kind of disappointed that such a fic doesn't exist. I guess I thought that there'd be one like that out there considering the show isn't new and there were a lot of Daria/Trent shippers who felt the same as I did.

I'm a little disappointed there isn't a Samurai Flamenco fandom. The last episode left me pretty happy, so now I want ALL THE FICS and ALL THE FANART.

I'm surprised by that, too. I was hoping to find a bunch of stuff like doujinshi and all that but there's very little going on in terms of fanstuffs.

Small close-knit fandom has been plugging along for a while, and someone just thought for the first time to make a main character trans. I'm kicking myself every day for not thinking of it myself, since it makes perfect sense, but now I can't. Oh well. Author is setting up some delightful tension among the characters and some sweet forbidden romance on the side. I have high hopes.

'Til the big dramatic moment comes, and everyone's like "Oh, you're a girl? Okay."

Today I read a really good first two chapters of a fic featuring a rare paring. Then I realized that said fic hasn't been updated for a year and has probably been abandoned, so I'll never be able to read more than those two chapters.

That happened to me some time ago but instead of only two chapters, it had several and the only chapter missing (since 3-4 years) was the one the author said would be the last. OTL

Aw man, I'm sorry, OP.

As for me, a popular writer in Night Vale fandom deleted her account and all her fic. I don't even know why she left.

For context, the MLP fandom has some really horrible misanthropes. I've learned to watch for red flags in stories that have ponies interacting with humans, because there's a decent chance they'll wind up all "Ponies awesome, humans horrible." (And if they are, there's a very high chance of "All humans should be transformed into ponies so they can be awesome and not horrible.")

There's an author I've been reading for a while who's done some really interesting analysis of a character who doesn't get much focus in canon. He decided to do a fic about humans interacting with ponies, and it threw up some red flags right off the bat. There were at least three comments in the first page of comments that were along the lines of "I wouldn't normally read this, but you're such a great writer that I'll give you a chance," and he did a comment in response promising that he'd give humanity a fair portrayal.

In the very last chapter, he went straight for "humans are horrible, ponies are awesome, humans would be better off as ponies."

My one consolation was that the vast majority of the commenters were as or more pissed off than me. I haven't seen this much rage at an ending since Mass Effect 3. (He seriously didn't understand what everyone was so angry about--he thought he'd ended on a message his readers would agree with.)

There's a long-running story in my fandom that's not complete. The author keeps promising to update it, but I know it'll never get done. It's disappointing.

Was it the Notting Hill AU in Teen Wolf? I read that today and it was just the movie with the names changed.

...maybe.

Okay yes, yes it was. I saw the discussion that led to the author deciding to write it and it was adorable and had me so excited for the whole thing, and then yeah, it was just the movie with the names changed. So sad.

I'm not surprised by this, but still bummed that I've seen no fandom activity for the current Puberty Blues remake. Come on, Australian fandoms, you can do it! I believe in you! Fic it uuuup!

Since the announcement for Durarara's second season, I decided to make an attempt at finding some decent fanfic. I already knew the fandom was overrun with OOC Shizaya (disclaimer: I wouldn't even mind that pairing if someone could actually write it well) from my fairly brief searches around the time I had finished watching it. Still, a more thorough search turns up nothing. No one can write anything in the Durarara!! fandom, or I am far worse at finding good fic than I thought I would be.

Nah, it really is really hard to find good fic. Personally, I would love to read something centered on Mikado where he isn't either a really, really wimpy ukemoeshota or a completely OTT psycho.

A podcast from a fic I love so much was announced for the end of March, but there's been no news about it. I was really really hoping this time it would finally been true that they were going to release it on time, especially since it's been almost two years since they've been announcing it. :(
