dark skin tones tend to equal disadvantage, especially if you have a dark skin tone and features that aren't clearly European white.

Where? I have no disadvantage when I visit a country north to mine with paler people, like the Netherlands or Denmark.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
...are you seriously going to argue this.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That the world is not America? Yep.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
oh yes, nowhere but America are people disadvantaged for having dark skin. let me present my own personal white person anecdote as evidence. racism is an American thing. etc etc

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaand got call white later than I assumed. Never change, SJWs.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, only a SJW would cringe at a pale white lady being the savior of all the pathetic dark skinned slaves. Oh those SJW, so sensitive about everything. no normal person would think that scene was in horrible taste.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT. "Normal"? So now taste is not objective, and those who disagree with your taste are not normal.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Normal = American

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
you're really trying hard on this one, aren't you

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But that is not the argument that you've stated. Should I just assume at this point that you're a troll out to make zero sense and only rile people up? I think so, yes.

American book, American show = legit application of American sociopolitics

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
International co-production, shown all over the world and filmed in Europe and North Africa with an overwhelmingly non-American cast and crew. US subscribers to HBO represent a fraction of the worldwide audience of GOT.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Moroccan cameos in Morocco for a fantasy series of fantasy peoples. Americans offensively bumping them with black people. Americans applying black and white racial hangups people and countries that simply do not have them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think a non-white person is pretty qualified to argue that non-white people aren't necessarily privileged in places outside of America/Europe.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Not when they actually /disagree/ with me!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
lol my sister has tan skin and she's as privileged as can be. Tan-ness isn't the only determinant of racism, o obfuscating one.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Classism is another story.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Visiting a country =/= living there. Living somewhere you'll quickly discover prejudices you never had to think about when you're traveling.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
(AYRT and who has actually lived in different places other than her home town and country)

But many of those prejudices aren't based on race but on non-being-local.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Or religious. Muslim in Netherlands or France or Switzerland? Doesn't matter the tone of your skin one bit.
Also the Germans didn't care if you're black or white, just if you were Jewish or had Israeli (which is ethnically white) descent, or an untermensch Slav (again white).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
lmao yes tell me more about the continent I have actually lived and traveled into, plus North Africa where I come from in the first place.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
My mother tans up as dark as a native Indonesian, which probably saved her life during the communist purges in Indonesia (she's of Chinese descent).

It's almost like the American model of race was developed for American circumstances and can't be applied the world over unmodified because the world is a complex, fucked up place?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's crazy talk!
