Jennifer Lawrence.

Mainly because she's Katniss and she shouldn't be, but I notice that as long as she's not promoing for THG, I can just scowl and keep going about my day.

Why don't you think she should be Katniss? Not trying to start a fight, I've just heard a lot of different reasons and I'm curious about what yours are.

The book is pretty obvious on how she has a darker complexion than her sister and mother - who are blond and blue eyed (I think about the eyes, but they are blonde).

Katniss is supposed to be olive skinned, dark hair, and grey eyes - and before someone tries to link me to a picture of various white women who fall under that skin tone - she looked similar to her father, who came from a part of district 12 that was treated like crap by the merchant class her mother is from.

As well as only having white actresses audition for the role. Yes, Katniss is at least part white, but they picked the all-American whitest chick in America to play her. I wouldn't have minded nearly as much if it was an open audition and she won (though they probably would have tried to circumvent it and pick a white passing girl with a ~black grandmother or something), but as it stands, she has my vitriol.

I agree with this. I can't go along with the people who think that Katniss was explicitly POC because the people pointing out that "olive skin" describes a lot of white people are right but so many of them go too far and act like it only describes white people. It's completely ambiguous. As such, the casting people definitely shouldn't have limited the casting call to white actors.

Though as much as I think the casting process was fucked up, I still like Jennifer Lawrence.

Katniss describing her skin after recovering in a hospital. She even calls her own skin "white and pale."

People who still cling that Katniss was some dark skinned young woman should actually read the damn book before commenting. Olive skin doesn't mean dark. It means having a greenish under coloring.

These things I actually acknowledged in the comment you replied to with phrases like "Katniss is at least part white", but there's always one on F!S not reading. Daker complexion =/= dark.

That tumblr post isn't quite correct. Olive skin, as I've been told, classifies a range of skin colors, from white to dark. It refers to if the skin has greenish-brown undertones. So, yeah, people are actually referring to the green type of olive.

Italian people tend to light olive skin, and Katniss lived in area that had a large italian population, so people tend to think that her dad was probably italian.

You do realize that Mediterranean people are the defacto olive skinned crowd, right?

They're not the only people on earth who can have an olive tone.

Yes, they are. Their skin color is result of an environmental mutation specific to that region of the world.

Ahh, I see what you're saying now. Lawrence's casting is still off, but I get your point.

I feel this way about her as Mystique.

I really don't like her as Mystique. I'm cool with her as Katniss, though I agree the actual casting process was a mess.

I find the hype around Jennifer Lawrence kind of obnoxious - not that she is necessarily a bad public figure, just the worship because she is so ~real~ and eats pizza. not to mention the absurd "she's not skinny" - she is slim, maybe she's bigger than a lot of actresses (?) and maintains a healthy weight, and maybe that's good for Hollywood, but she's not a hero for being a size, what, six?

That being said, I actually like her as Katniss, because she makes me like the character a lot more than I did in the book. The second movie, she just made Katniss a lot more real to me. I agree the casting call was a mess, and it would've been really interesting and wonderful to get a biracial girl. But at the same time, there's nothing wrong with a white actress because olive skin doesn't indicate race. I think she is amazing at the role, so different strokes I guess.
