The last time this question was asked, I couldn't think of anything that I would be afraid to admit I like but now I think I have something.

Say Yes to the Dress.

I hate reality shows, including most shows that follow real ordinary people doing ordinary things. I tend to feel creepy following them around as they go through their day. And I just feel weird watching something like that after how vehement I am about how much I hate other shows like it.

But the dresses are so pretty.

I watch Say Yes to the Dress as well. I know I would never spend that much money on a dress so I vicariously live through those people and love seeing the different dresses.

I have a hard time imagining myself spending that much money on a dress I'm only going to wear once too. But I keep having imaginary conversations with the consultants about what I like and I feel really silly every time I do it.

That show also gives me the urge to dig up an old Barbie video game I played as a kid where you could design dresses.

That was my guilty pleasure too. I used to live in a student housing that had only basic cable, and Say Yes to the Dress was one of the few shows that was remotely interesting. I generally hate reality tv too, but SYTTD at least aims to make the women in the show happy by finding them their dream dress.

Yes! That's what I love about it. I despise What Not the Wear and that was the other big one that people in this house would watch. But SYTTD is such a good antidote to all the "wear this, not that!" because it's all about what the person who's going to be wearing the dress wants.

Except when they bring relatives along who keep vetoing the bride's selections. I think the final selection should be made in a separate room with JUST the bride and the dresses she's looked at, nobody else allowed. (Yes, even if the other person is paying for it. It's HER WEDDING and HER DRESS. If you want a dress you approve of then go get married yourself, you buttinski! Yeesh!)

My mom and sister watch that on Friday nights (not really with their whole attention, they're usually doing something else) and if I'm home I might grab my laptop and join them. My dad calls it "insipid TV" but sometimes he joins us too. XD

It kinda makes me cringe - the attitudes of some of them and how much they're willing to spend on a wedding dress is outrageous. It's more acceptable background noise than anything, because I can comment on the dresses themselves or on the drama and chat with my fam about it.

I think this came about because we used to watch What Not to Wear together before it ended, and SYtoD often came on after it. And say what you will, I really did love WNtW.

I just absolutely hated the attitude of What Not to Wear where they would treat it like an intervention and I'd feel like shouting at the TV "just let her wear what she likes!" But I have friends who like it and I don't try to tell them they're wrong or anything.

I've never heard anyone talk about it that way before, and I honestly think it's a pretty unfair assessment. None of the women were forced to participate - they agreed to take the challenge. And there were some good reasons for them to receive the help and correction that S&C offered. A lot of the them had self-confidence issues and used their clothes to hide (figuratively and literally); there were also women who were basically clueless about how to dress for a job or interview and it was holding them back. And they did work with them to find stuff that suited their style - they didn't just say "wear this even if you hate it".

Also, even though I'm moderately pleased with my style and wardrobe, I would take the challenge in a heartbeat to get free $5000 for clothes and lessons in how to shop and style myself from experts, even if it meant throwing most of my current wardrobe away. I like the styles S&C use, and nobody would make me wear what they picked out, either during or after the show.

I think their attitude is even worse in cases where the women are lacking in self-confidence. But explaining why would be nothing but me projecting my own feelings onto a bunch of strangers, so I'll just say that I hope the people who went on the show enjoyed the experience.
