Guilty pleasures - fandom edition
(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:43 am (UTC)(link)For me...I came across adverts for Otome games on my mobile a few days ago. I downloaded "Shall We Date? Ninja Love" and...I'm hooked. I want to get the "Super Happy Ending" with all the guys and am frustrated that the purchased version doesn't have music and the choices of guys doesn't have as many as the free version. And I hate how slow the free version is. They purposely make things expensive so you get suckered into purchasing coins and I hate games like that (yet here we are...).
I feel like these games are directed toward a younger audience, but I can't help but really like it. I'm not that big on anime either.
PS. Any Otome players out there? Any games you'd recc?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 12:51 am (UTC)(link).... when it wants to be.
- Undercover Boss. It's a horrible show; most of it's scripted, very rarely does it seem any problems are actually solved, and yet it's a fun guilty pleasure. I've even started guessing who's going to have the angst and what it might be.
- This isn't really a guilty pleasure anymore, but I still loved The Office when it seemed everyone gave up on it - admittedly I thought the post-Michael seasons were mediocre, and season six was cringeworthy, but I loved season seven and I loved seasons four and five even when so many fans hated them.

I was just lamenting on how I've been playing since I was 9 and I've never gotten a FFQ/Random Paintbrush/Random Trans potion.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:01 am (UTC)(link)As for guilty pleasures... well, I genuinely enjoyed the now-defunct webcomic "Latex Blue", even though it is objectively atrocious in every possible way. Seriously, I don't recommend even looking it up, let alone attempting to read it, because it has basically no redeeming value. And yet...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:18 am (UTC)(link)LOL!! Thanks, I'll check it out some time!
Anon because seriously
(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)* Actually, I like their smarter songs, too. The Bloodhound Gang is pretty awesome.
** To quote Y Ruler of Time, that's not a joke, that's the title of the manga. My Balls.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)Apparently the writing is terrible? Except it's way better than shit like Supernatural, so IDK?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:22 am (UTC)(link)The following are examples with mostly stat raising mechanics and are all for the pc (although some have ios versions) , mostly english developed (because I tend to get bored of pure vn)
If you're looking for free games, there's things like RE: Alistair++ (
4 options, not too long but quite nice)
On the pay side there's publishers like Winter Wolves (also for ios, I think) with vn and dating sims, and sometimes smallish farming mechanics. I really liked "Remember me", it had random encounters and a nice count of cgs. "Nicole" is a mystery that I also quite enjoyed, even though the stat raising was very linear and the girl talked too damn much.
Super63 has one game that I really really liked, Lucky Rabbit Reflex.
Also then there's of course the widely known Hatoful Boyfriend (date pigeons), I have not yet finished it, but I heard good things about it.
Also if you generally like dating sim mechanics in your rpgs or simulations and own a console or are into emulating there's always harvest moon, and entries 3 + 4 in the Persona series (seriously, these two titles are damned good), the PSP version of Persona 3 adds a female Main Character option. That said, romance isn't the main point in these games.
Hoped that helped maybe a little bit. Have fun

Say Yes to the Dress.
I hate reality shows, including most shows that follow real ordinary people doing ordinary things. I tend to feel creepy following them around as they go through their day. And I just feel weird watching something like that after how vehement I am about how much I hate other shows like it.
But the dresses are so pretty.

Anyway, not sure if this counts as an otome, but you might want to check out the Ascension series by rinmarugames! It's this fun epic fantasy type adventure with romance and action and it started as a guilty pleasure for me but now I pretty much unabashedly love it, hahaha. I dunno it just makes me really happy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 01:50 am (UTC)(link)I'd be all over otome games if there were more translated. Theres's a translation for http://vndb.org/v7585 but it hasn't been updated in a while. Idea Factory also sems interested in bringing in Amnesia, but other than that, Hakuouki, and a few mobile games there's not a lot of otome games translated.

You have to spend money, but my absolute favorite indie otome games are the ones by Zeiva, which you can get here.
Castle Chase is also really good, and is probably my favorite free game. You can find it here.
Finally, this is a pretty good resource for keeping up with otome games that have been made in or translated to English.

I don't think this is that unusual of an opinion though?

It's out of nostalgia because a friend from ages ago quoted the lyrics a few times, but I only bothered to look it up sort of recently. And even then more than a few listens gives me a headache, but another part of me enjoys the obnoxious vocals, blunt and earnest lyrics, and middle school nostalgia. It's a weird love/hate limbo that I don't even fully get.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)yeah i know, a lot of people like it but i will never tell someone irl that i do bc i am so critical of the actual series and i don't want gross people jumping down my throat for not finding rape scenes "romantic"
