You're probably right 98% of the time but there's no way to enjoy Plan 9 From Outer Space in any non-ironic way.

I would describe it as "I enjoy how bad it is" not "I enjoy it ironically".

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
...so laughing myself sick, MST3King it and generally enjoying the baldfaced camp of it all is "ironic" now?

Tonight I learned the hipster definition of "ironic" is worse than the Alanis Morrisette song of the same name.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean yes, at the end of the day it's all enjoyment. But you can genuinely enjoy something simply because it is so awful. It's a different kind of enjoyment and pull than a well done show or movie. Kind of like how some people love to hate. It's a thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate the 'ironic' liking thing. I feel like it's just a way for people to say "I like this embarrassing thing, but I don't actually want to be judged for liking it." Own your enjoyment, people.

I can understand the feeling if it is something very bad like The Room, but when it's said about something mediocre I can't help but think they secretly enjoy it.

[personal profile] blueonblue 2014-03-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I genuinely enjoyed watching The Room, just not in the way its creator intended.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So, anyway, how's your sex life?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never said "I'm enjoying this ironically", but I have found that there's a range of different types of enjoyment? From 'this is the best thing ever!' to 'this is dodgy but I love it' to 'this is so cheesy and awful but oh gods I love it so' to 'this is hilariously bad' to 'this is a legitimately fascinating slo-mo trainwreck of awful that I cannot look away from'.

There is a gap between 'appalled fascination', where I'm still enjoying just sort of incredulous, and 'disgusted horror' where I'm hitting the off-button in two seconds flat and/or 'WTF I don't care' where it's just too boring to go on.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-28 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of times people use "I am enjoying this ironically" when what they mean is "I am enjoying this even though I also think it is bad". There's a weird defensiveness about it sometimes, I think - "my taste can't include this thing so therefore I will say it's ironic".

I'm not going to get worked up over it though.

It's ironic to enjoy something for how bad you find it?

But... I just- I just like laughing at a show that wasn't meant to be a comedy.* I kinda enjoy it straight but not much. It would piss me off too much if I watched it seriously. So we can't watch things because we think they're bad?

I guess Shit stream needs to be shut down then.

*Ten points if you guess the right show.

This reminds me of a post on Tumblr: don't do something "ironically," eventually it'll just become something you do. Pretty accurate :P

See: Glee

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-29 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
The first season, I can see people genuinely enjoying. It was like the first season of Family Guy; it didn't take itself too seriously and parodied things it plays perfectly straight in later season.

And then somewhere between the second half of the second season and the beginning of the third season, the only reason I stopped laughing while I watched was so I could continue to hear Darren Criss' buttery voice.

as I understand it, it's one of those cases where the creator had a planned arc for like 12 episodes or so, and then had to improvise after that

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
"Enjoyably bad" is a thing though, and has been for ages.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
It's another name for "guilty pleasure."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I think I get what OP means here. I once had a classmate who said, all condescendingly, something like, "You don't watch the Simpsons for its commentary, do you?" (implying the person was shallow because they didn't). Like, there are other ways to enjoy a show besides watching it for the messages it sends about society - some watch it because it's plain old funny. Although it can be interpreted at a deeper level, they choose to look at the surface. I feel that's sort of what watching something ironically is, watching something out of inherent feelings of superiority because "OMGZ how can people love this? Hee hee, I'm not a sheeple because I see the true worth of this show." Whereas a lot of people in comments are talking about something that you know is camp but enjoy anyway (even if you agree it's terrible and snark on it).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
I agree that some people are pretentious douchebags about it, but at the same time ... I wouldn't say I watch shows "ironically", but I do think there's a difference between shows I watch because I think they're legitimately good shows with good writing and thoroughly enjoyable, and shows I watch because they're the TV equivalent of shitty fast food that you enjoy while you're at it and then you're kind of disgusted that you ate it, but you'll still eat crappy fast food again the week after.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
...But I love laughing at shows that are really bad. Like, I can't believe they did that! Ooh here marches in the next predictable trope! But it can get boring unless the makers are obviously trying way too hard and falling on their arses in all the wrong ways you can think of, or, more usually, there's some fast-food entertainment along with the flimsy cardboard of the story.

Are you really young or something? Enjoying movies or shows because they're hilariously bad is not a novel concept.
