TW: suicide

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
At the point in time when Dale didn't want Andrea to have a weapon, it was because Andrea was a danger to herself and others. (Herself, because she still wasn't over her suicidal hopelessness resulting from losing her sister, and others... shooting and nearly killing Daryl when she did get hold of a gun? Leaving a suicidal Beth alone to cut her wrists?) He wasn't wrong, and her rebellion against his "decree" honestly did come off as a very teenage, "You can't tell me what to do! You're not my dad!"

Agreed about the other characters, though.

I'm not condoning suicide, but I'm not going to judge her advocating that Beth be allowed to make her own choice given the world they live in.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I don't remember her being suicidal or hopeless. Depressed, yeah, but it's a depressing situation. I do remember her being in the trailer without a gun when she needed to kill a zombie that was attacking her.

Daryl was a long ways away, filthy and unrecognizable, and limping. It would be pretty easy to spot that and say 'yup. That's a zombie.' Not saying it was her smartest decision (pointing a weapon at something when you're not absolutely sure what it is? No. The noise from the weapon could've drawn other walkers to the area as well) but shooting at something that looks like a zombie is not an unreasonable decision to make in this world.

Beth wasn't someone who had thought through her situation seriously and decided to opt out of post-apocalyptic existence; she was an emotionally distraught teenager who was likely to recover and adjust if given time, and who shouldn't have been left alone.

There were already people from her group moving in to deal with the "zombie" Daryl with silent melee weapons, and a single "zombie" against the three armed survivors would not have posed serious danger. Andrea just wanted to show off what a badass she was; there was no practical reason for her to take the shot, and it turned out she almost killed one of their own people.

As far as Andrea herself is concerned, concerns about her potentially still being suicidal were what prompted Dale to take her gun away to begin with. She may or may not have been actively trying to kill herself anymore at that point, but she was definitely reckless and unstable, and I think he was right not to trust her with a firearm at that point.
