Imagine it like this: You and I are in a fist fight. "Real time combat" or at least what I think the OP is referring to as such, would be like how you would envision a real life fist fight would work, people dodging, shuffling, throwing multiple punches at a time etc. What the OP probably likes is referred to as turn-based combat, so in the fist fight example, you would take a punch at me, then you would stop, and allow me to take a punch at you, then I would let you take a punch at me, and would proceeded until someone was knocked out, and we are taking TURNS punching each other with nothing really occurring at the same time.

Aahhhhh okay for some reason I thought that was how all games operated (see also: I am a non-gamer)...I didn't know turn-based combat was a thing. tyvm!
