i prefer it over turn-based combat, because it adds to the tension of the situation. in turn based games you can just eat a burger with one hand and play with the other but in real time combat you have to concentrate on what's going on and stay vigilant, and i think it's a lot more immersive. turn based fights don't feel like fights to me, they feel like a chess game. that's great, but not what i think of when i think 'vicious fight'.

this. hell, i've gotten up to go do the dishes in the middle of turn-based games. they can be fun and they're plenty of them that i enjoy, but i hate the sitting around and waiting for each character to take their turn.

I'm fine with either, but I do have a soft spot for the classic turn-based system. I also really like games that sorta mix the two -- the fighting system in Resonance Of Fate was a good example of this.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well that's why companies like Firaxis are designed for OP.

Oddly enough, I'm still having trouble with getting my head around this secret. Does the OP mean that any combat that does not result in turns they can't stand, like they prefer combat style of paper mario or civilization over any game where you come across enemies and beat them up, like rpg's, platformers, or shooters, or do they mean they don't like real time combat in their strategy games, like the combat in age of series?

I could have made this secret, so I'll explain why I dislike real-time combat. My hand-eye coordination is crap, but I enjoy the strategy of combat. As a mom, there's often someone or something demanding my immediate attention, forcing me to pause or leave my game before my turn.

The OP's reasons could be different, of course.

Does this apply to all genres or just RPGs?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
OP here. I was mainly talking about RPGs. I find real time combat too rushed and chaotic. In turn based systems I get to enjoy the individual attacks. Also, I like hearing characters call out their attacks.

What is "real time combat"?

Re: explain like I am a non-gamer

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
what does it sound like? it's pretty self explanatory.

Re: explain like I am a non-gamer

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Imagine it like this: You and I are in a fist fight. "Real time combat" or at least what I think the OP is referring to as such, would be like how you would envision a real life fist fight would work, people dodging, shuffling, throwing multiple punches at a time etc. What the OP probably likes is referred to as turn-based combat, so in the fist fight example, you would take a punch at me, then you would stop, and allow me to take a punch at you, then I would let you take a punch at me, and would proceeded until someone was knocked out, and we are taking TURNS punching each other with nothing really occurring at the same time.

I thought it was the other way around. All the turn-based, strategy gamers feeling superior over the FPS crowd.

Not that I care either way. I'm like you, no judgement. It would be like despising coffee drinkers just because I only like tea, although I'm sure there's some corner of the internet where that happens as well.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-03-30 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not convinced that's how things really break down. On the one hand, you have the resurgence of "hardcore" roguelikes, RPGs, and 4X games with the indie game renaissance. And on the other hand many "casual" games are not turn-based and may not even have a useful pause feature. Tetris is cited as the prototypical "casual" game (simple ruleset) but depends on time pressure.

I think I prefer real-time because I can get very bored with turn-based combat, but I've played games where I've enjoyed turn-based so really I think it just depends on the game.

I hate real-time combat in JRPG-type games. I treat those as pure strategy, and want to take my time thinking up long strings of moves to execute in my mind.

But I like real-time combat in most other things, like Metroid and Contra.

Depends on the game. One of the reasons I've never managed a complete Bioshock playthrough is the abuse of the character's blind spot as a mechanic. On the other hand, stealth/timing games like DX:HR or Beyond Good and Evil don't bug me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Me too! I understand why people who like it like it, but my reflexes are no good in a permanent way and it shuts me out of a lot of games that I would otherwise love.

I don't think I've played turn-based since I was a kid, but it was fun. Once I got hooked on hack-n-slash, though, I was a lost cause. The more intuitive real-time combat somebody can shove into a game, the better. Now, stealth and shooters...that's the shit grinds on my last nerve.

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-03-30 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. I like turn based games that really, really exploit the mechanic by making the combat so difficult and the strategies necessary so complex that it would a lost cause in real time (like some of the megaten games) but for your generic "press X to make it die" RPGs I don't really see the point. It's not like it's asking you to do combos.

Good for you? Like, I think hate is a bit of a strong feeling, but I don't think that needs to be a secret. Lots of people threw major hissyfits when Final Fantasy introduced sorta real time combat.

Totally agreed, OP. Real time stuff is not only stressful, it's unfair -- some people are naturally faster or better at games than others. I don't want to do worse just because I can't hit buttons as quickly as someone 30 years younger than me.
