I'm not convinced that's how things really break down. On the one hand, you have the resurgence of "hardcore" roguelikes, RPGs, and 4X games with the indie game renaissance. And on the other hand many "casual" games are not turn-based and may not even have a useful pause feature. Tetris is cited as the prototypical "casual" game (simple ruleset) but depends on time pressure.
