Amoxicillin should not make you sleepy. I am on it right now for an URI. And I have taken it before since I was a kid. Sleepiness has never been a symptom. Neither has swelling. ESPECIALLY swelling.

I think you are having an allergic reaction to the medicine. I would call if I were you RIGHT NOW. Do not wait.

What's your dosage, by the way?

Amoxicillin has always made me sleepy, every single time I've had to take it.

It's a 500g tablet, one three times a day, for 5 days.

That's not a unusual dose. But I'd still call because that's an usual symptom.

Tiredness is a rare, but known, side-effect of amoxicillin. It's one of those things where you're supposed to let your doctor know the first time it happens in order to rule out a more serious complication, but then just be aware of it going forward. My brother has managed to freak out everyone who has ever lived with him by having all the rare side-effects to certain antibiotics, which have included everything from tiredness to paranoia and twitching.

...I'm much like your brother, only add in that I am allergic to all but one class of antibiotics. Fortunately I managed to narrowly avoid the reaction where your skin melts off and you end up like a third-degree burn victim. (Sulfa drugs. Never again.)

Medications affect different people in different ways. While there are common symptoms for stuff, saying "such and such shouldn't make you sleepy because it never makes me sleepy" doesn't make any sense. It's like saying "pizza shouldn't give you heartburn because it never gives me heartburn".

Unless the fatigue is extreme, like the patient is falling asleep where they stand, then no, it's not something to panic about and it's not unusual. When people have unusual allergic reactions to medications, it tends to go waaaaaaay beyond feeling sleepy.

Seriously, I'm starting to wonder if some people are getting their medical information from fanfic or Scientiologists or something. Sleepiness and localized swelling at the site of an infection are not symptoms of an allergic reaction.
