OMG, this. This is what I've seen and it bothers me. I eat crap because crap is cheap. And I can generally get a variety of crap for cheap. (Like different sauces for pasta or hot dogs and stuff.) If I had to eat beans, rice, and lentils every night for dinner like people are suggesting, I couldn't handle it. (I would love to be able to eat healthy food. I actually like fruits and vegetables. But it just isn't practical when you have next to no money for food.)

I don't know if the fact that I've seen people say exactly this with all deadly seriousness makes this more funny or less.

Never mind how an internet connection has become vital to finding work.

I remember reading a while back that someone was complaining about homeless people having smartphones and laptops.

Like, dude, those things are actually crucial for survival and job-finding, these days. I can't count the number of times I've seen a 'Hiring Now!' sign on a store, only to be told that the actual application has to be filled online, and that's before discounting homeless people using the Internet to find good places to eat for free or cheap, sleep safely, etc.

Oh but internet is available for free, and it's not like getting to the nearest library with such free access might require access to a car or public... ohhh.

And even that is assuming that the library computers are up to snuff - which they aren't always. -_-

it's always funny how many people are mortally insulted if someone suggests they eat legumes for economy's sake. it's especially to me since in my family lentils were tasty comfort food and i still miss my father's lentil soup.

*insert Tumblr post about how cheap food is when you only think about it in terms of cost per bread slice, not how much you have to actually pay for the damn loaf*

Because bread, especially bread sans artificial additives, keeps so damn well. And people living in converted-closet apartments have the space for a bread maker. And the money to buy one, even used. And a place to buy flour in bulk. And store flour in bulk. And transport flour in bulk. 50 lbs sans car=no fun. And money to keep the electricity on and buy flour in the first place. And so on.

My family walked a tightrope between working and lower-middle class when I was growing up, but my dad was obsessed with healthy eating, so we went without new clothes so we could buy organic. Meat was an occasional flavoring and never the actual meal. We ate tons of rice and beans and yet somehow escaped the dreaded lentil scourge. I'm poorer than my family was, but I still don't often eat lentils, mainly because they're not actually all that cheap where I am. Bulk pinto beans are lots cheaper at the local Mexican market and also I know more ways to cook them. I learned to cook from a young age, which lots of poor people never do, and I have time to cook because I'm under-employed when a lot of working poor work multiple jobs and eat on the run because if they have down time they fall over exhausted. People who froth at the mouth about "eat moar lentils" never think this shit through, or try it themselves for longer than a few days so they can blog/brag about how virtuous they are.

Whenever that comes up, I tell them to eat that, themselves, for 3-6 weeks straight and then come talk to me.

The reactions to that have been...interesting.

I can understand buying the ingredients in bulk, but why bake it in bulk, especially when you have a hypothetical bread machine and can set it to do its thing overnight without you watching the clock and coming back to knead/bake/cool it? (And what does baking it in bulk even mean when you can only bake one loaf at a time with a bread machine, anyway?)

Also, if you bake it in bulk, you'll just watch it go moldy in bulk.

As a super-late lurker in this post, I laughed way too hard at this thread. Is this a reference to that one thread where ?thene? was telling people they should just buy lentils in bulk and save their grocery money in response to some hypothetical about why poor people eat fast food? That thread really stuck in my memory, because I found it quite funny.

God, I hate it when people say things like that. I see it all the time. It's so indicative of that 'poverty only exists because people don't pull themselves up by their bootstraps' kind of thinking.
