Weird things that appeal to you for some reason

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
For me:

Umbrellas

Lavender/lilac colored things (I wish I could find clothing in this color, it doesn't seem to be a popular one)

Bridges that go between buildings or walkways between them. When I was a kid I had a book with a picture of these vacation cabins with covered walkways between them - the book's captions were kind of derisive, like "look at how those people went on vacation in the country, but didn't really stay outdoors" but I thought the cabins were really cool.

Rainy weather

Power lines. I think some of them have a really special aesthetic.

Weetabix with raisins. I don't like plain weetabix, but I don't want to put sugar in either, so I sweeten it with raisins.

The sound of freight trains at night.

Stairs. I have such a weird obsession with staircases of all kinds, to the point that stairs are a recurring dream motif for me. My mam used to find me as a child by heading for the nearest staircase to wherever she'd lost sight of me. Reliable as clockwork.

Bridges that go between buildings or walkways between them.

Those too. And normal bridges, and piers, and trees hanging over water, and I think mostly all bridging sorts of spaces? Things that make connections across air/gaps. I like the combination of height and paths.

My school has three buildings that are connected by walkways. They're my favorite things. :3

Trees without leaves on them, I guess? And close-up pictures of eyes, human or whatever.

Symmetry. I really really like symmetry.

Did someone say symmetry?

Rainy weather.

Bridges with buildings on them (you see these a lot in Europe, I think.)

Neon lights.

Night trains.

The way the sunlight streaming through the window flickers at a certain time of day as the sun dips behind the highway and cars pass in front of it.

90s west coast hip hop in the summer.

Empty or mostly-empty highways during the height of the day.

Green streetlights (rather than orange.)

The sound made by a small plane flying overhead on a sunny, warm day early in the summer.

similarly the sound of trains passing in the night etc, but something about that specific situation is just so classic and good and awesome to me

You know how sometimes it's a summer evening and you're wandering around in a park or meadow where they let the grass grow several inches high and the weeds grow free, and the sun's going down but you can still feel the day's heat rising off the ground? I like how the grass smells then.

Small, efficient objects. They have to be small enough to have a tactile presence in three dimensions, they have to be designed to do something, they have to do that thing well, and they have to not have extraneous design features that reduce efficiency. Then, given all that, they have to be beautiful. Certain smartphones, certain weapons, certain tools (mini-crowbars!), certain pens, even a travel-size pill case can have this appeal to me.

Firefly fans, you remember how the bounty hunter Jubal Early talked about his pistol in "Objects In Space"? Basically exactly that.

Those bridges are called skyways:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyway

Anyway, I love fog and foghorns, wind farms, plants growing out of crevices in rock, flat outcrops of bedrock (that form a sort of pavement you can walk on), wind-sculpted trees, treeless landscapes that are very green and have a lot of vertical relief, and abandoned and dilapidated structures (especially industrial sites) of the sort that attract urban spelunkers.

Rust
Plants growning out of cracks in stone walls or pavements.
Peeling paint
Mysterious holes in things
Mossy tree trunks

When I used to have a camera phone it was regularly filled up with random photos of every instance of these that I saw on walks.

Raw ramen. I take a packet of ramen, crush it up a bit, open it, sprinkle in some of the powder, hold the end closed to shake it up a bit, voila, instant snack! Or, I pull the ramen out and put it on a plate (after breaking the two halves apart) and sprinkle some of the flavoring on it, and eat them like toast.

It's delicious. And weirdly, when I was a little kid everyone seemed to do it, but now no one ever seems to have heard of it and look at me funny whenever I mention it or do that.

But then I often like to eat bread without anything on it - no oil, butter, jam, etc. Only really good bread, but apparently even that is bread blasphemy.

Idk if weird, but I really like distinctive vapour boundaries.

For instance, when you can see a perfectly flat wall of clouds, or when you have mist that collects over a pond or in a valley and it just looks like a pool of indistinctness.

There's a highway near me that happens to have a treeline which forms a mesa that's located close to a broad river that leads into a small bay. If you drive up it during a rainy day often see just a veil of fog or cloud coming in off the water that's formed into a perfectly flat vertical curtain because of how the air currents are pushing it. Always makes my day.

Rainy weather for me too.

The sound of the string section of an orchestra tuning.

Plain hot water. (I like tea too, but... sometimes I just want a warm beverage. This is, apparently, hideous and unacceptable.)

Rye toast with avocado.

Ugly, awkward looking, or somehow flawed stuffed animals.

Purple anything, clothes/pillows/blankets/candles, if it's purple I will probably want or have it somewhere in my room.

Pen pots, I have like a stupid collection of pens and I am always on the look out for nifty looking pen pots. My favourite is an ancient Egyptian pen pot that I got in a store that existed for all of four months in my town centre, it was an impulse buy and I love the thing.

In a similar vein: pens, I really like collecting pens. Not even to use them necessarily but to just have them. This also extends to notebooks, I have so many of the damn things and they are not all in use.

I like to lie on my back on a sofa or bed and splay my legs up the wall or hook my legs over the back of the sofa, I don't know why I like doing it but I do, also it's pretty comfy even if everything is upside-down.

Me too! I dye white clothes - cotton works best. It's quick and easy and I usually get good results.

You would like Minneapolis a lot, OP; they have a system of glassed in "skywalks" connecting a lot of the downtown buildings. This is a luxury you can very easily learn to appreciate in a place where daytime highs dip down into the 20s (Fahrenheit) for about three months of the year.

Abandoned buildings that are falling into disrepair.

Seeing private homes tap their maple trees for sugaring. There are maple sugaring farms, which I like seeing as well, but passing by a house that only has 3 or 4 trees tapped is strangely exciting. I don't know why!

Standing on a bridge over the highway near my house and zoning out to the sound of cars and the sight of blurry lights. :o
