I always thought I would find Dragon Age (and Fallout etc.) fanfiction weird because your character is customisable and would feel too much like someone else's OC but I actually found quite a few stories that I really liked. I think it's because you still have the more or less same plot as a frame for the story (which is why I can't read modern AU fics for those fandoms).

Yeah, I agree for the most part with this.

On a semi-related note, I do think it's kind of silly for people to gripe about OCs in fandoms where they're pretty much the norm (mostly MMORPGs; and even things like Pokemon, where you have a literal blank slate with no real personality whatsoever, just a physical appearance that's now customizable with X/Y), but that's just IMHO. =V

I thought it'd be odd when I hit up the SWTOR kink meme (it has plenty of smut, but some fluff as well), but most of it's pretty good, though it's also easy to super impose your own (some writers give a vague enough description of the OC that you can do that, which i believe was on purpose).
