Inspired by real life.

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-04-01 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So, today I had a dentist appointment and like many people I was terrified! They were cleaning and scaling my teeth. I thought it would be super painful and take like 3 hours.

I was pleasantly surprised that I felt very little pain (almost none) and it took less than hour. And it cost $30 less than I thought it would.

So I want to know what are some experiences you dreaded OR was excited about, but it turned out being much easier or not as awesome as you thought it would be?

My first Zipwire ride, horrified at the concept, love the things now.

Do you go very fast on them? The only thing I know about them is what I saw on South Park. :X

i thought playing in a band would be the best thing ever. it wasn't. in fact, it sucked balls. there was always a fight or some kind of tension going on, nobody could agree on anything, and my 17 year old self was shocked to discover that musicians are the laziest, most arrogant sort of people on the planet. i'm still bitter when i think about it.

What instrument did you play (or sing)? Was the band like friends or just people who wanted to form a band?

i played drums. we were acquaintances who knew each other through music and we decided 'why the hell not?'. then after the whole thing was over we decided to part ways and never meet again because it would only bring back bad memories.

First time I was in Uni I was so intimidated that I barely talked to anyone. Now... eh, I'm still working on it. DX

On the other hand, I went on a trip to Instanbul many years back and instead of it being an adventure, it really felt like I've gone back home, even though it's a friggin thousand miles away from home!

I still have no idea why I felt that way during that time.

Where you live now (or where did you grow up)? And why did you visit Istanbul?

I had a meeting today. I thought it would suck horribly. Instead, half the people who were supposed to show didn't, and instead of this one lady doing all the talking everyone else got to say something. It was surprisingly productive.

Meetings are terrible. Meetings where nothing gets done are extra terrible. I am glad all the slackers (?) didn't show up!

It's a bit TMI, but for me it was sex. I'd really psyched myself out over it and was afraid that it would hurt/that I'd get everything wrong/etc., but then when the time came it felt completely natural and I had a great time, as did my partner. I was actually so relieved by the sudden release of all those years of built-up tension that I broke into a massive gigglefit right there in the bed.

I am glad you had fun. And I think a lot of the time (especially in regards to sex) all the terrible stuff you hear from other people can really terrify you. Because people always seem to talk about the possible worst scenario that could happen.

I had a dental related one last year. I went in for a root canal, and once the dentist got a good look she realized it wasn't as bad as she originally thought and all I needed was a filling. That saved me a couple hundred bucks.

Man, if I had that happen (uninsured) it would save me about $900. D: And I have to go back eventually for fillings (once I get the money together).

Every time I go to a family event or an event hosted by a particular group of friends.

With family, I'm so looking forward to seeing everybody and then I get there and spend the entire day in a corner knitting because I have very little in common with my relatives and not a lot to talk about.

With the one group of friends, we used to be much closer before I hit the point where I just couldn't deal with some of the way they act, so I approach their occasional parties with a sense of dread. But when I get there, I alwys end up having a great time and remembering that, oh yeah, they are lovely human beings in small doses, and 2-4 gatherings a year is about the perfect amount of time to spend with them.

I usually end up enjoying family outings more than I thought I would (except for a couple certain family members).

But I generally don't enjoy parties with friends unless they are at a house.

Getting my wisdom teeth out--which I had been dreading after listening to friends' tales of horror--turned out to be ridiculously straightforward. I went to sleep in the oral surgeon's office and woke up with stitches in my gums--they came right out like pulling a radish. I think I used maybe one of the pain pills I was given.

Fortunately I have been able to keep all my wisdom teeth! But I am glad yours were so easy. My sis had a pretty terrible time with them.

I have a dental-related one too! I had part of a filling break off here in Korea, and I was hesitating to go to the dentist because few people speak English, but my Dad's insurance no longer covers me so it was pointless to wait and get it done at home so off to the university dental hospital I went! It was super intimidating at first because all the signs were in Korean and mine's decent but not that good, but the people at the desk saw a confused-looking white girl wandering around and called out the best English-speaker on staff to point me to the right desk and fill out the admission form. I got checked out, x-rayed, old filling drilled out, new filling put in...there were translations difficulties a-plenty but they did a great job and the whole process took about 3 hours and cost me under $200, God bless Korea!

Woo that is awesome. I have to eventually get a bunch of fillings, I hope none of them ever break. Did it hurt bad?

I finally went to the queer space at my university (I'm bi, not out yet), and I sat outside for a good 15 minutes, absolutely terrified, convincing myself to walk in.

I went in there and... it was ok, I guess. There was one guy who was welcoming and friendly. But I ended up sitting at one end of the room, and most of the girls sat at the other end of the room, and they started talking about sex toys, and yeah.

It just felt awkward, and I felt left-out and a bit silly & prudish, since I haven't had sex before, and I don't really feel comfortable with frank discussions of the subject with complete strangers.

I'm not sure if I'll go back there, but I don't know what else to do.

Aw, I'm sorry you had a terrible time. And I understand when you feel prudish around people that like talking about sex (sometimes all the time). I have a certain co-worker who does that. -_-
