Neighbours!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I got some new neighbours today, and the only reason I know this is because they decided to start moving in at 12:30 AM. I think they are done for the night now, as it's quiet now, so they didn't do it for too long (It's currently close to 01:45 where I live), but still, who moves up into the 4th floor after midnight on a weekday? It really shouldn't annoy me too much, as I was awake anyways, but I still think it's rude, especially considering that it's meant to be quiet after 10 PM (which it says in the lease, so even new people should know) and they didn't put up a notice of any sort (though I get that this may be a bit difficult if they weren't around earlier today). And I mean, I get it, work and perhaps school and other things in life take time, and perhaps you only have free time in the evenings, but really, after midnight? Blah, I'm just annoyed.

So, now that I've gotten that out, do any of you have any stories about bad (or good!) neighbours you feel like sharing?

I live in an apartment so most of my neighbours suck. My one awesome neighbour is diabetic. I have had to nearly break down his door when he has collapsed in order to test his blood glucose and force feed him sugar.

He's the nicest guy, but holy shit man way to nearly give me a heart attack.

I don't think my neighbors exist because I never see them. I think they work the early morning shift because I hear them taking a shower at like 5:30 sometimes.

That can be a very good thing. Quiet, unobtrusive neighbors are good neighbors. (As long as their showers don't make it really hard for you to sleep. That sort of thing doesn't usually bother me...)

In my first apartment building, there two guys living in the basement who I guess were in a band. One day when I guess maybe we both had windows open or something there was this exchange:

Guy 1: *Strums electric guitar*
Guy 2: Auuuuugh!
Guy 1: Louder! Strums *Strums electric guitar*
Guy 2: AUUUUUUGH!!!!
Guy 1: LOUDER! *Strums electric guitar*
Guy 2: AAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHH!!!!!
Guy 1: LOUDER!!
Guy 2: *normal voice* Dude, I can't go any louder.

Nope, that is definitely annoying. Your annoyance is justified.

Actually my neighbors right now are cool. My neighbor on one side is chill and I sometimes chat with on the bust stop. On the other side they occasionally bring us food for no apparent reason so. xD

My neighbors are terrible. We have the only nice house on our street so the rest are crappy ones that have people moving in and out. And the people on our left (right next to my bedroom) keep their light on all night. :(

I'd invest in garlic and holy water. Having neighbors who move in the middle of the night has been the set up to many, many vampire movies.

who moves up into the 4th floor after midnight on a weekday

People who would otherwise be homeless, and need to take occupancy as soon as the lease turns over? Just a guess.

I have already told FS my tale of woe and horror of the year and a half I spent rooming with filthy pre-med students in a boarding house. Flies. Flies everywhere.

Thank god, my neighbors right now are all very quiet, polite people, but a while back our landlord's son (a student at the university) and a few of his friends lived in the apartment two floors below mine-- and I could feel his shitty dubstep pounding through my floor. THROUGH TWO FLOORS. I can only imagine how insane it must have driven the people right below me.

the first ~12 years of my life my neighbor was my grandma. and some family on the other side we only talked to sometimes. then we moved into an actual neighborhood and still...never knew the neighbors beyond their name lol. i did get to know their cat! he would come into our yard sometimes to play with our dog. shame that they let him roam though, he got hit by a car and died a few years after we moved there :/

I have very considerate neighbors. I don't interact with them much myself, but they're always very friendly when we do talk and my dad has almost nothing bad to say about them (which is super-rare for my dad). The one thing I notice most often is that they have (reasonably quiet) guests over all the time, but make sure that nobody blocks out driveway.

I have no neighbors right now (house next door is empty) but a friend of mine once said to me "I think my neighbors are smoking pot."

I asked her why.

"Because they keep ordering pizza and they've been playing the same reggae song for the last four hours."

My neighbors right now are an Indian family and they always invite us over during Deepavali. Their treats and crackers are some of the best I've tasted!

I had a creepy downstairs neighbor at one place that literally watched to see when my car left the parking lot, sent me a card with no name/return address just a random phone number (he later said it was him), kept track of who visited my place and would knock on my for at like 5 am then stand where I couldn't see him (and yes, look through the windows if I didn't answer).

Re: Neighbours!

I'm living in a house now, so neighbors don't really bother me unless they're being really noisy outside. But that's usually not a common occurrence.

A few years ago I was living in a split level home where I was renting the upstairs and a girl was living downstairs. She was the craziest bitch I think I ever met. And I only really met her a couple of times. Anytime my husband or I would do stuff like listen to music or watch TV or play video games, she'd complain to our landlord. We turned our music down, raised subwoofers off the floor, we did everything we could, and this bitch still wasn't happy. But she'd never talk to us personally, she'd only go bitch to our landlord about it. At one point we asked our landlord if we could all meet together to discuss her complaints, but she didn't want to do that. Anytime I went downstairs to talk to her (and I knew she was home) she wouldn't talk to me. She'd often pitch a fit to the landlord and then take off for the weekend so that she could avoid us. Finally, one night when all my husband and I were doing was walking to the bathroom to get ready for bed (and it's not like we were stomping our feet or anything, we were walking normally) she flipped her shit and started banging on the ceiling. This was at 1am. I got so fucking pissed off, and my husband even called our landlord in the middle of the night and left him a message about it. I stomped my ass downstairs and pounded on her fucking door, but of course, she didn't answer. Then she disappeared in the morning and was gone for a week. I confronted her when she came home, and she claimed she did it because 'she had to deal with it everyday.' I basically called her a psycho bitch and walked my ass up the stairs. Eventually she moved out, and when she did, my husband and I celebrated. I still think she was just over sensitive and expected things to be pin-drop quiet even though the house was fucking OLD and had creaky wooden floors and shit. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to walk around to avoid parts of the floor because of my crazy ass neighbor. She never called the police because she knew that she couldn't, it's not like we were blasting music or anything like that to where the police could get involved. If maybe she tried to talk to us like a reasonable adult, then maybe things would have gone differently, but she was only interested in throwing temper tantrums.

I don't know most of my neighbors, which is fine with me. I have met one, my upstairs neighbor, once in almost a year of living here. The situation proceeded thus:

The setting: Sunday, early afternoon (~12pm), my apartment.
The history: I listened to music (mostly Norah Jones & Ingrid Michaelson, which is only to point out... not exactly death metal) playing relatively softly in my room for maybe half an hour as I cleaned up. I then turned it off, about fifteen-twenty minutes before this incident.
The incident: a knock on my door. It actually took me a few minutes to realize that it was my door, since I was not expecting anyone.

Neighbor: "UMMMMMM is that you playing the music???"
Me: "... Maybe? I mean, I had music on awhile ago?"
N: "WELLLLLL it's RIGHT underneath my bedroom and like BOOMING the same chord over and over again."
Me: "Um, I'm not sure that's me, then? Maybe your upstairs neighbor, or...?"
N: "WELL WHICH ONE IS YOUR BEDROOM????" (Sidenote: pretty sure every apartment is set up the same in my building.)
Me: "The one back there?" *points*
N: "No yeah that's definitely you. Can you PLEASE keep it down????"
Me: "Um, of course... Sorry for any inconvenience?"

... I have been baffled by this incident for the longest time. 1. Why would you wait until 10 minutes after the music stopped before you came down to ask about it? 2. It's fricking noon on a Sunday. If I have to listen to you have awkward loud sex at 1am on a Friday, you can handle some Norah Jones at a reasonable hour. 3. ?????? I'm just confused by the whole thing.

I feel your pain, OP.

This has happened to me with the last three neighbors where I live, the last one moving in at midnight on a monday night. Who the hell does that!? As you say, I think this is very rude, considering I have to wake up at 5:30 for work, and I know most of the other neighbors have to wake up early as well.

I knew in that moment that particular family were going to be a pain in the ass, and I was right about that. They used to lock up their two infant kids for hours while the mother went to gossip with other midwifes while their children were screaming their heads off through their home window; the couple used to have huge fights in the middle of the night (really HUGE fights), they used to blast horrible loud music at all hours, they stealed energy power from the power lines, and used to block my entrance with a fucking giant TRUCK. Yeah. As you can imagine, I was ecstatic the day they left and totally didn't wish them to rot in hell

We have an older neighbour who keeps using his fireplace for heating and he burns just about everything, even wet wood/wet leaves and he does that from early autumn to late spring. Our house is on a hill and his is below ours and my room lies in line with his chimney. This means I can't open my window from autumn to late spring unless I want to die of smoke poisoning.

Re: Neighbours!

My last neighbours were evicted but they left a horrifying mess in their house (my mom and I helped clean it) plus they left a female cat and two of her kittens. The female would attack our cats if she so much as caught glimpse of them. Both her and one of the kittens just disappeared one day so we brought the last one inside. We couldn't get it to socialize though so we ended up taking it to the pound. The female was a problem since our cats spend the majority if their time outside.
