Secret 2 makes a legitimate point.

Is there any other production company that has managed such a variety of shows with mentally challenged characters? I can't think of a single one without them.

Especially autism.

I'm actually writing a character who is on the spectrum, and am trying to figure out how to deal with it accurately. One big thing is that it is NOT who he is - it's a detail. Also, he's not inspirational, and hates it when people throw around that word.

I have had friends with autism, and I've read about autism, so I feel I have groundwork that will keep things realistic - it's not like all I know is from Autism Speaks (ugh) or Reader's Digest articles. But as I don't have it myself, I don't want to unintentionally butcher anything or insult anyone.

But how in the fuck is Haru mentally challenged? I don't get where people are getting this from.

Because /a/ decided that it hated Kyoani and all their moeshit and autism's their go to insult.

>Obsession with water
>Habitually wears the same item of clothing for years
>Poor social skills and lack of social awareness (see attempts to get into the aquariam
>Inability to communicate his emotions
>His friends reactions to all this

What are the symptoms of autism.

It's a joke. A lot of his characteristics are parodies of how characters in other sports anime are portrayed as being completely and distressingly obsessed with their sport to the point where it's fucking weird although everyone in their shows just treats it as normal. Haru would probably fit right in if he was in a traditional sports anime but instead he gets stuck with friends who react to his antics the way sane people would. It's a fucking joke

He doesn't have any difficulty empathizing with others, or understanding their feelings, though. And I'm also not getting how we're jumping to a typical autistic social inability, when Haru is quiet but hardly stunted.

I have quite a few characters of mine in different stories who are on the autism spectrum. The important thing to me with these characters is variety. To show that there are so many ways for a character to be autistic and not just one personality that they all need to fit.

In my main work which is a Loads of Characters story has three two of them being twins and one character being a mixture of disabilities. In two other stories (separate stories) I have two female autistic characters one with a fascination about art and architecture and dreams, and another who really loves fantasy creatures and writing about "imaginary friends". The latter is somewhat based off of me as a child.

Then there's Toby , my character who's sort of ambiguously high functioning autistic and he's an alchemist's lab assistant who really likes both chemistry and art. He lives in a time where there wasn't as much information on the disorder though if he lived in modern times he'd definitely be diagnosed autistic.

I do this because well for one I like having the one character I can really understand the mind of and because I wanted to create a diverse set of characters with different personalities with autism.

That's really cool. I haven't written anyone on the spectrum yet, but I love to hear that it's being done.

DA

Me too, honestly, especially because of the way autism is viewed. I go on FB in April and all these memes are in my face about how people with autism are inspiring angels, and it's like... have you met someone with autism? People I know with autism wouldn't be touched by your "recognition," they'd be creeped out as hell, and rightfully so.
