I've always interpreted it as a dismissal thing because (until now I guess) I've only seen it used by non-religious people who are being derisive of Christianity. It could just be lazy, though. It's definitely not a respect thing lol.

This has never been my experience FWIW and I've always interpreted it as totally neutral and I feel like I've seen it used by religious believing Christians.

It gets boring typing out Christian over and over. It's a pretty common abbreviation although the same types of people who object to Xmas ("why are you taking the Christ out of Christmas?") don't like it. I'm a Xtian and I use it all the time.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-04 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care one way or another about the religion, but I AM lazy. So I always abbreviate it.

You've never been in a church that had a chi-rho, a symbol that goes back before Constantine?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-04-05 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Just Googled that and it doesn't even look familiar. Granted, the vast majority of time I've spent inside a church has been inside churches that lack a lot of traditional decoration.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen it much used by Christians. Sort of like an even more obscure "x-mas." It's not inherently dismissive, but it strikes me as an odd thing to do unless you don't care, or are trying to make a point (about how much you don't care).

You'd be amused to know there are some fundamentalist Christians who insist that "Xmas" and "Xtian" is omgsatanic.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-04-05 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
lol that's just...dumb

dismissive, maybe, but satanic?

I can't say I'm really surprised though considering the things some people call satanic without batting an eyelash.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
That's funny, because I've generally only seen it used by Christians who want to prove that they're being persecuted.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-04-05 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
lol

(I assume you're referring to western modern Christians, but even among that group I've never seen it used except just now, assuming OP is western)

(not saying it doesn't happen - people love their victim complexes, and I roll my eyes when I hear people saying that American Christians are persecuted, and people do say that - but there are Christians in parts of the world that do experience persecution so context may be required)

AYRT

Yeah, I'm referring to American Christians. And yeah, it's definitely true that there are places where Christians are actually persecuted. That's one of the reasons that I get really annoyed with people here who think that it's happening to them. There are Christians in the world who are literally being killed for their faith, and they have the gall to declare "we're second-class citizens now!!!" because they aren't allowed to discriminate against people who don't share their beliefs (oh, the irony).

I don't know, man. They live in a society that allows them the freedom to worship, and in which their religion is the cultural norm, and they not only take it for granted, but their complaints make a mockery of people who are actually suffering.

(I just want to disclaim that I'm not referring to all American Christians; just a very vocal, very annoying subset)

Yes, but, y'know, they might have to serve or aid someone who is icky! I mean, remember the story about the Samaritan? The priest and the judge didn't go near the icky dude, and they seemed like pretty alright people. One of them was a priest, for pity's sake.

I mean, being expected to serve just anyone...what kind of a world is that!

No, I feel you, and as an American Christian myself I try to be the first to call them out on their bullshit. They embarrass me x.x

Here you go:

Damn 7th century monastics disrespecting Christ by crossing him out!

Oh man, that's so pretty.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-04-05 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
That's not even the Kells manuscript:

An entire page devoted to two words from the Medieval Latin Matthew 1:18: "XPI generatio"

I am so glad that this secret has brought illuminated manuscripts to Fandom Secrets.

Nothing more dismissive than a monk.

Mmmm, love me some Chi Rho pages...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the only people I've encountered who thought it was dismissive or negative in any way were irrational fundamentalists, the kind of people who think the "War on Christmas" is real instead of some persecution complex thing.

It's an abbreviation, nothing more. If people use "lol" instead of "laughing out loud" it doesn't mean they think laughter is shitty.
