Until I pulled the dog food forward to get a couple of cans out, and it left a trail of slime behind it.
It was a 48 pack of canned food, stored on its side due to space restraints. At some point, probably when it was put away or maybe just from the pressure of all the cans above it, one of the cans on the very bottom had managed to deform enough to open at the top. Since it was a 48 pack, which is 24 days of food, and we had a few days left when we bought it, this wasn't noticed immediately. Since it was summer, this was a bad thing.
No one considered that the smell was coming from the dog food. It was sealed cans, why would we? But when I noticed the slime trail that the pack left behind, and the maggots in that slime... I knew immediately. And I just barely reached the toilet upstairs before I threw up.
My dad's response? He made me clean it up, because I was the one that found it. And called me a wimp for throwing up several more times and refusing to touch any can that had come into contact with the slime and maggots. I think I managed to save about two cans out of the eight left, not counting the pair I'd already grabbed for that night's feeding.
Since then we've always unpacked dog food and restacked it right way up so we can make sure none of the cans are damaged. No more storing large packs on their sides.

This reminds me of the time a can of soup turned out to have the seal cracked. The soup inside was totally bad.
Now that I think about it, there was also an incident with our potatoes. We were keeping them in one of our Tuperware canisters after stopping storing them in the cupboard under the sink (which is often damp because water would seep through cracks around the edges of the bench). The canister however apparently got sealed and the potatoes went off. Mum handled it, because I react badly to such things, but I think the canister still has problems with the lingering smell.
