A few months back, there was a nasty smell in the kitchen. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from.

Until I pulled the dog food forward to get a couple of cans out, and it left a trail of slime behind it.

It was a 48 pack of canned food, stored on its side due to space restraints. At some point, probably when it was put away or maybe just from the pressure of all the cans above it, one of the cans on the very bottom had managed to deform enough to open at the top. Since it was a 48 pack, which is 24 days of food, and we had a few days left when we bought it, this wasn't noticed immediately. Since it was summer, this was a bad thing.

No one considered that the smell was coming from the dog food. It was sealed cans, why would we? But when I noticed the slime trail that the pack left behind, and the maggots in that slime... I knew immediately. And I just barely reached the toilet upstairs before I threw up.

My dad's response? He made me clean it up, because I was the one that found it. And called me a wimp for throwing up several more times and refusing to touch any can that had come into contact with the slime and maggots. I think I managed to save about two cans out of the eight left, not counting the pair I'd already grabbed for that night's feeding.

Since then we've always unpacked dog food and restacked it right way up so we can make sure none of the cans are damaged. No more storing large packs on their sides.

I just want to point out that your family is fucked up.

Ugghh, and I thought the time someone accidentally put the lunchmeat in the cupboard with the bread was bad. At least my family's rotten food accident story didn't involve maggots.

I honestly don't blame you for reacting badly to it. You Dad was being a dick.

This reminds me of the time a can of soup turned out to have the seal cracked. The soup inside was totally bad.

Now that I think about it, there was also an incident with our potatoes. We were keeping them in one of our Tuperware canisters after stopping storing them in the cupboard under the sink (which is often damp because water would seep through cracks around the edges of the bench). The canister however apparently got sealed and the potatoes went off. Mum handled it, because I react badly to such things, but I think the canister still has problems with the lingering smell.

I can't go into the most disgusting, b/c I'm always worried that HIPAA will somehow find me, but, I will give the most disgusting I am allowed to divulge.

So, a few years ago I was a new parent. The kid was a few days old, and spending time w/ Parent #2 for a minute while I grabbed a sorely needed shower. Halfway through, I hear screaming from the other room, jump out of the shower with shampoo in my eyes and haul ass down the hall, to find my spouse standing at the diaper changing table with a look of horror. And poop. Poop everywhere. Poop all over the wall. Poop all over the lamp. Poop all over the nightstand. Poop all over and IN the crib. Not just any poop. Tarry new baby poop. It must have sprayed six foot.

Anyway, after I finished laughing, we had to clean that shit off. It was super gross and it stained.

I had a gelding who hated the feel of latex on his penis, so I had to clean his sheath with my bare fingers. The smell would linger for days no matter how much I washed.

One time when I was growing up, somebody left a load of laundry in a basket in the hall for a while. One day, I was running through the hall, slipped, and landed hands and chest in the basket. At first, I was laughing about it until I noticed the smell of the laundry and the fact that there was what looked like tons of rice in it. I was like, Why is there rice in here? And that's when I noticed that it was squirming around. Maggots, people. It was a bunch of maggots. It was an experience to remember.

Nothing on your experience, but the canteen at my old secondary school was screwed up. I once unwrapped a burger to find it literally crawling with ants! How does that even happen?! And one of my friends was lucky when she opened her sandwich before eating it, there was a grasshopper inside. Oh God.

Okay, you know that one of the events of Ai-dil-Ad-ha is the "the Feast of the Sacrifice" which is ritual slaughter of animals for meat?

I had to participate in it. And by participate, I mean sitting on the floor of the abattoir packaging the frigging jiggling raw meat into plastic bags as everyone else around me cuts the cow into meat slices. Did I mention that the meat is jigging and moving on it's own due to nerve impulses?

I'm hoping I'll get a pass this year.

Eeeeww, I didn't know raw meat did that. I've personally sacrificed a chicken before and found it an interesting experience but I didn't handle the meat afterwards. I thought all the moving was supposed to stop after a while D:

We had pantry moths last year and they were so awful, augh. They originally came in a shipment of bird seed, which we store in tubs in our kitchen cabinets. Well even after we figured out where they came from and put all the seed out and cleaned the tubs, they just were in our house. The got into sealed tupperwares of four and rice, in boxes of crackers and cereal and cookies (I almost put a cookie with a baby moth on it in my mouth D:), even a bottle of oregano. We chucked a lot of things from our pantry and cleaned everything and we still occasionally see a single one. Ick ick ick.

Mine wasn't to the level of yours but I've had to deal with maggots in cat food, which was disgusting, and half eaten animals with maggots crawling around inside them that I had to throw out(thank you kitties).

I haven't personally encountered it, but I was incredibly grossed out by the story told to me of a female friend-of-a-friend who went to the doctor after a few weeks of involuntary orgasms only to be told they'd been caused by maggots squirming about inside her. I feel faint just thinking about it.

A few years back I was working in a small museum and assisting in overseeing classes and so on. We had a pre christmas program where school classes would come, get a tour and then sit down and eat cookies and maybe meet santa claus and exchange some presents.

My job was to prepare the room where the class would eat, prepare tea, hot chocolate, cookie plates and so on and be santa claus if necessary. This included washing the dishes and so on.

We had some special hand made dishes for just these kinds of occasions. So a few days before the first class was to arrive, I opened up the cupboards with the dishes... about 90% of which had grown green swathes of mold on them. I went to get some vinegar and left that whole mess in there...

After I cleaned the dishes I saw that at least a quarter had developed black mold in the cracks that of course wouldn't wash off.

So I went to my boss and told her that we could not in good conscience give these dishes to elementary children to eat from.

She said, we couldn't buy new dishes now and using cheap paper dishes would be not giving these classes the service they had bought... so we put napkins on top of the dishes and I tried to use only the dishes with the least damage.

The really badly overgrown ones I put in an open box, where it stood in the same damp, cold kitchen I had to work in every day for that miserable december.

I still regret not sending an anonymous tip to an health inspector or something.

I've never actually told this story before, since it's so gross, but with a request like that, I might as well comply. Just remember that I warned you it was bad.

Back when I was really, really sick, the doctor gave me a container for a stool sample. I forget exactly how it went, but somehow I wound up with one more container than I needed, along with a stick resembling a Popsicle stick that was meant to scrape excrement into a container. I didn't want to carry the stick out of the stall to the trash, so I stuffed it into the empty container.

I thought it would fit, and it almost did. Then it flew out like it was spring-loaded, spinning in a circle and flinging excrement in every direction along the circle.

I cleaned all the excrement off the floor and the stall walls. Then I left the stall, went to the sink, and cleaned the excrement from my clothes, face, and hair. I did my best to ignore the folks washing their hands at the sink and staring at me.

I couldn't reach the excrement on the ceiling. It took more than a month for anyone to notice it and clean it off.

Bought a bag of rice. Cooked some rice, started eating it, with lots of soya sauce, cause yum. With the sauce on, I noticed a weird sort of segmented bit of rice that looked like a bug. Noticed another. Realized they were small rice-sized bugs. Threw out the rice. Checked the bag, and there were clumps of rice stuck together where some horrible creatures were nesting and hatching.

All of this came from a sealed store-bought plastic bag of rice.

For YEARS, I could not eat rice. When I finally started eating it again, I would first measure the rice, then pour it out onto a plate, and visually inspect all of the rice before it went into the water.

Totally scarred me. I'm hopeful that the manufacturers are better about cleanliness and contamination standards these days, but still, sometimes I still have to look before eating.

I walked into a public toilet, looked at a mountain of shit that was all up the back/top of the toilet, the seat, the side - they must have been crouching with feet on the seat to get it up there - noticed the brown footprints leaving the stall - I turned myself around and left.

I do not remember anything that I specifically tagged as the grossest thing I have seen, but I have a good story. I wasn't there, but heard this from someone who was. My ex-bf has several older siblings and two cats (presumably - hopefully - he still has them, hmm) both of whom are indoor-outdoor cats. One was a pretty regular hunter and sometimes left mice on the porch or whatever.

Soon after one of his sisters left for college - this was years ago, before we started dating - the hunting cat left a mouse in her bed. Evidently nobody was going in that room since...nobody lived there anymore. They didn't notice anything until the smell started to waft out of the room several days later.

Working in a grooming salon, the amount of poop, pee, and vomit I had to deal with mostly got me to a point where it took a lot to actually gross me out. But there was this time ... this very large GSD started spewing out tons of bloody diarrhea, like covering the entire table he was on and a couple feet of the floor. It was bad enough when it just seemed like really dark black liquid, but then I started cleaning it up and realized that it was red. We freaked out, of course, and called the owners and told them they needed to come get the dog and take it to the vet, because that's really bad.

Then there's always the times dogs come in with so many fleas, and covered in flea dirt ... which is basically dried blood flea poop ... which turns back into bright red blood when it gets wet ... which makes it look like you've murdered a dog when you spray them with the hose and bloody red water covers the (white, of course) walls. While the fleas start abandoning ship. Ugh.

There was one toilet block in my college I refused to use for the entire time I was there, after venturing inside on my first day and finding EVERY SINGLE STALL had urine, feces, or menstrual blood (I ASSUME it was menstrual blood and not from anything else) - or all three - on the seats, floors, and sometimes walls.

What the fuck HAPPENED in there? There were like ten stalls and all of them were completely disgusting!

I think it's a toss-up between the dead mouse in my garage (maggots were involved) and the time I was working retail and a young toddler had a massive case of diarrhea that overflowed his diaper and completely filled his grandmother's open purse that was right beneath him in the cart.
