Bought a bag of rice. Cooked some rice, started eating it, with lots of soya sauce, cause yum. With the sauce on, I noticed a weird sort of segmented bit of rice that looked like a bug. Noticed another. Realized they were small rice-sized bugs. Threw out the rice. Checked the bag, and there were clumps of rice stuck together where some horrible creatures were nesting and hatching.

All of this came from a sealed store-bought plastic bag of rice.

For YEARS, I could not eat rice. When I finally started eating it again, I would first measure the rice, then pour it out onto a plate, and visually inspect all of the rice before it went into the water.

Totally scarred me. I'm hopeful that the manufacturers are better about cleanliness and contamination standards these days, but still, sometimes I still have to look before eating.

This happened to me with couscous!! Ugh! So revolting!

AaaaAAAAaahhhh no no no I like rice I would like to continue to eat it without checking obsessively for bugs oh god no. I don't even know you and I just want to hug you and cry.

AYRT: Why thank you, that is very kind. :) But it was about 15 years ago, so I've *mostly* got over it, and I hope to God that food inspection has improved (because the worst thing was, I bought another bag and my obsessive inspection paid off. I guess it happens/happened more often than we think). But still - I accidentally boiled bugs, and then I ate them. :(

In recent years, I've been eating Calrose California brown rice, and I've never found anything wrong with it. So, you know, that's a good one to try out.
