No, what we need right now are more non-SJ people, not less people in general, that way the balance can be restored and the fandom can return!

Makes me wish I had joined the fandom earlier, honestly.
I have the same username on tumblr if this secret is about SPG, and you ever just want to talk about the music. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)But then I'm one of those get-off-mah-lawn fuddy-duddies who thinks their humor was funnier when they were busking and the music was better when Jon was still there.

The block function is my friend. |D
I got into the band after the Jon showed up, so I can't comment on the busking, but I have to say, I like te band both with the Jon and with Hatchworth. |D

Wait, seriously? What the fuck fandom! D:
Re: OP
I'm just not active enough in the fandom, or haven't been lately. So I guess I've missed some of that.
I'm all for people being able to connect to bands on a personal level, when the band members are public about struggles that some of their fans might share, and I do believe it has the power to help people. To use my own high school years as an example, I grew up in such a small town, where there was no one around me who went through what I went through, and at the time I listened to a lot of... oh gosh, a lot of old Beach Boys and REM and Morrisey, and some other stuff. It was not nearly as personal as the SPG fandom gets to be, but I had music that I could listen to and feel like somewhere there was another human being who wrote this song because they felt something like what I felt. It was tremendously helpful, but at the same time, when I talk to people about fandom and about music, there are times when I don't want the focus to be personal, so I get where you're coming from.
Sometimes you just want to talk about the music.
TL;DR

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)The majority of fans are casual fans; they buy the media and talk about it, but they don't actively participate in fandom.
I wouldn't worry about their success or failure because of a few people you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 04:52 am (UTC)(link)About your impression of your fandom dying, though... yes, that's tough, but it's the nature of fandom: the active time of any fandom is essentially transitory. Heartbreaking, but happens to the biggest fandoms. :(

But certainly it has no impact on the commercial reality of the band's success, no worries there: the above post is 100% on that score too.

If anything, I think people that are just interested because a member is appealing are not very good fans. There is nothing wrong with finding members attractive or unattractive, of course. But if that is the only thing that makes someone interested or not interested, then it seems to me that they are more a fan of the person, then the band itself.

Our nine month old has a wooden teething ring replica of the one ring with the runes burned all around it. It is adorbs.
