It's an SJ issue to NOT be concerned solely with how attractive someone is?

IF it's the band I think it is, (which it might not be), the woman in reference is a trans woman, hence why thinking she's pretty is kind of SJ-y, and anything else is being transphobic. Seriously, (if this is about the band I'm thinking, which, again, I could be wrong), I've seen people claim that not liking a particular stage outfit design is transphobic. It's weird.

It's always good when SJ's have a joy in their lives die though.

But it's not good for the rest of us who want to enjoy the thing without the fandom dying. :(

Sacrifices Lora. Sacrifices.

But... But... I don't wanna. :I

No, what we need right now are more non-SJ people, not less people in general, that way the balance can be restored and the fandom can return!

Hey. You got it in one.

Oh. Cool. Sorry that it's annoying you, though. Seriously, I have anon enabled on my blog if you ever want to just talk about the music. :)

I'm guessing that we are thinking of the same band and that we're correct. (and I'm digging your icon)

Yeah. Makes me kind of sad, though. :(

(Thanks, it's from a pic racoonmama took. :3)

You sound like a pretty low key, well adjusted fan who enjoys music and isn't overtly into celebrity, so I don't see how that's being a bad fan.

Steam Powered Giraffe, anon? Color scheme matches up, as does what you're complaining about...

Makes me wish I had joined the fandom earlier, honestly.

I have the same username on tumblr if this secret is about SPG, and you ever just want to talk about the music. :)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I immediately thought of SPG as well. Their Tumblr fandom in general has always been a little annoying but it had gotten to the point where I gave up on going into the tags at all. Too full of histrionics for me.

But then I'm one of those get-off-mah-lawn fuddy-duddies who thinks their humor was funnier when they were busking and the music was better when Jon was still there.
loracarol: (spg)

[personal profile] loracarol 2014-04-05 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been going to the tags, but recently, yeah...

The block function is my friend. |D

I got into the band after the Jon showed up, so I can't comment on the busking, but I have to say, I like te band both with the Jon and with Hatchworth. |D

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
For me it's weird. I don't have a preference for before or after Jon although I was into them for a long time while he was there. Personality wise, Hatchworth is my favorite robot now, but I didn't like MK III. Maybe I like The Jon's harmonies better? The songs are better live but then you have to deal with all the screaming. I'm probably just being bitter because I hate Rabbit's new costume and every time it changes a little I hate it more. Those vertical stripes with the ugly seams on the side and wrinkly ankles need to go. And the in-between dress was better than what she's wearing now. It would just be nice if people didn't get driven out of the fandom for disagreeing with things that shouldn't be important. I had the change my tumblr username because I said Rabbit's make-up was better before when it had uneven lips and cheek vents and the fandom came down on me.

Wait, seriously? What the fuck fandom! D:

I miss the cheek vents, but I like the latest costume... But wow, it's a shame people came down on you!

I'm just not active enough in the fandom, or haven't been lately. So I guess I've missed some of that.

I'm all for people being able to connect to bands on a personal level, when the band members are public about struggles that some of their fans might share, and I do believe it has the power to help people. To use my own high school years as an example, I grew up in such a small town, where there was no one around me who went through what I went through, and at the time I listened to a lot of... oh gosh, a lot of old Beach Boys and REM and Morrisey, and some other stuff. It was not nearly as personal as the SPG fandom gets to be, but I had music that I could listen to and feel like somewhere there was another human being who wrote this song because they felt something like what I felt. It was tremendously helpful, but at the same time, when I talk to people about fandom and about music, there are times when I don't want the focus to be personal, so I get where you're coming from.

Sometimes you just want to talk about the music.

TL;DR

.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
What you have to understand, and this applies to the majority of fandoms, is that the people you see on your corner of the internet are not the majority of fans.

The majority of fans are casual fans; they buy the media and talk about it, but they don't actively participate in fandom.

I wouldn't worry about their success or failure because of a few people you know.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the above anon: I am not familiar with this specific fandom, but rest assured there are always a few over-invested fans who can sour a fandom if you get the impression they are in the majority and you are in the minority. If it's not SJ issues, it will be something else: since they tend to be the most vocal, it inevitably colors our impression of the fandom.

About your impression of your fandom dying, though... yes, that's tough, but it's the nature of fandom: the active time of any fandom is essentially transitory. Heartbreaking, but happens to the biggest fandoms. :(

*sobsSGAsobs*

But certainly it has no impact on the commercial reality of the band's success, no worries there: the above post is 100% on that score too.

You are not a terrible fan at all! You like the music or support them and want them to be successful. That sounds fine to me!

If anything, I think people that are just interested because a member is appealing are not very good fans. There is nothing wrong with finding members attractive or unattractive, of course. But if that is the only thing that makes someone interested or not interested, then it seems to me that they are more a fan of the person, then the band itself.

Awesome, OP.

Our nine month old has a wooden teething ring replica of the one ring with the runes burned all around it. It is adorbs.
