Most of the stuff I've seen based on this interpretation seems to be humour, and mainly black humour at that. Nobody seems to have lost sight of the fact that they're the villains, or at least not in the parts of fandom I frequent.

(I'm also wondering where the woobifying-only-porn-writing Silm fandom is. I mean yes there's porn, but it's not exactly an overpowering amount compared to the meta and meta-turned-fic stuff that's also there. I generally think there's a pretty good mix)

That's what I was thinking. Especially phobs' artworks and comics are like that - if you actually think that what they are drawing is actually phobs being serious about it, I have news for you.
But I generally often get the feeling that there is a certain branch of Silm elitists who just don't get that you can both be seriously invested in a thing and at the same time not take everything about it seriously all the time.

Well, nobody is telling you not to have fun... but your fun is still taking the form of fanwork being showcased in fandom, sp once it's out there for people to see, those people are perfectly within their rights to think that your work is shit, serious or not. I think the crop of cutesy Smaug/Bilbo art that bloomed in The Hobbit fandom is stupid, even if none of it is meant to be serious.
