All of these recent Silmarillion secrets just make me think - are we talking about the same Silmarillion fandom? Because yes, Morgoth/Sauron is everywhere, but I've never seen any woobification for either of them? Usually it's all "aw fuck yeah villains and corruption!" It's all pretty damn dark.

I really wonder where this mysterious Silmarillion fandom is hanging out that apparently woobifies villains and only writes porn instead of discussing meta.

I kind of agree. I'm all over creepy, messed up Morgoth/Sauron (and Sauron/Celebrimbor). But the woobified stuff is frustrating, especially when I'm looking for in-character stuff and all I can find is that.

Most of the stuff I've seen based on this interpretation seems to be humour, and mainly black humour at that. Nobody seems to have lost sight of the fact that they're the villains, or at least not in the parts of fandom I frequent.

(I'm also wondering where the woobifying-only-porn-writing Silm fandom is. I mean yes there's porn, but it's not exactly an overpowering amount compared to the meta and meta-turned-fic stuff that's also there. I generally think there's a pretty good mix)

I don't know, I feel that this is true of the Silmarillion Tumblr tag, but not so much for the wider fandom / fics and so on.

Woobified baddies are terrible. Well, I mean, baddies who are also woobies can be pretty great, but when a baddie isn't a woobie and the fanfic always tries to make him one, that's terrible (I'm sure some people like it, blah blah blah, taste is subjective, but by me it;s terrible).

Hannibal and the Sauron/Morgoth pairing are superb examples of terrible woobified baddies.

The Sauron/Morgoth doesn't squick me out the way Maedhros/Fingon does, so I don't mind it nearly as much, but it's ubiquitous and ridiculous. I get you, OP.

Yeah... In a remote kind-of way I think it's kinda cute... but it's really not my thing. I like to keep Morgoth and Sauron as bad guys, probably because I like to preserve Boromir's enemy and the Silmarils' kidnapper as being bad.

The closest I come to anything nice about them is acknowledging that Melkor could be outwardly nice, when he wants something, and when it serves him well to act so, but in the end, he's still evil. Like listening to his Elven lieutenant who is arguing for kinder treatment of the silmarils.

I'm so torn on this. The pairing itself bores me, but I love a lot of the art for it (it can be really same-y though, and it would be great if more people would come up with their own interpretations). But, yeah, it's everywhere. I definitely see it more often than Fingon/Maedhros, both in the tag and from people I follow. I don't really get the appeal, but to each their own.

To be fair, one of Sauron's characteristics was that he could become charming and beautiful when it came to seducing elven ringsmiths or human kings. I forget exactly when he lost this ability.

Shipping Silmarillion characters is so weird to me because I never viewed them as like tangible people but more like entities.
