Yeah, they're both evil together? It's not like people are woobifying Morgoth/Maedhros or something like that. Sauron is canonically described as extremely loyal to Morgoth.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
If being "evil together" means cuddling, sure. It's mostly Sauron's depiction that's annoying. Fine, he had that "fair form" thing going on with the Numenoreans, and Annatar must have been a hottie, but he was a shape shifter and while working for Morgoth was known as Gorthaur the Cruel (sounds pretty metal) and "Lord of Werewolves". Can we see some more of that? No?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh come on you can be evil and still cuddle when you're not actually doing the evil stuff. Maybe you can even be evil while cuddling.

I kind of want to find someone to try this with. Unfortunately none of my friends like being evil. :(

Ever since I found out that Tolkien wrote about Morgoth being a rapist in side materials (and his interaction with Luthien in the actual book had creepy overtones to begin with), I've been unable to stomach fluffy interpretations of him.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, what? Any references?

I'm slightly distraught that things have to go that far before the frikken' embodiment of evil is seen as undeniably evil.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
I think you can ship evil characters, but everyone has some kind of "Nope, not going there" personal line and that is it for me.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
You people are absurd. This is a general observation, not related to Tolkien in specific; stomaching torture and genocide and going all "ewww, creepy, gross" at rape or even a grope is completely illogical. As an adult woman, I understand that the former in reality are immensely worse than anything else so everytime I see people acting like you, I imagine you must be very immature still.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly, you sounds completely ludicrous, as genocide, torture and rape are all widely considered distasteful subject matters that nowadays we are usually expected to warn for in fanwork. People's reactions to these things go beyond "eww, creepy, gross"; even in fiction they can be genuinely upsetting. There are "silly" trigger warnings but nobody would consider those to be such. If someone finds the idea of reading fluffy villain porn about a rapist off-putting, they are perfectly sensible to avoid it, because fandom isn't some kind of test of character that demands you to put yourself through experiences you'd prefer not to. Maybe you're not quite as mature as you thought, as you seem to thing the mark of an adult is the ability to be apathetic in the face of things that most people consider upsetting.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
If they want to avoid it, fine, but they have no right to come screaming their being upset at me who doesn't give a shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
...and you thought that comment the anon made about being put off by that character being a rapist was directed at you, specifically? LOL who do you even think you are?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Most people" find fluffy porn about a rapist upsetting? Looking at the Silmarillion fandom I'd day it's the complete opposite. Nice projecting though.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:15 pm (UTC)(link)

Your post was about Morgoth, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The last sentence - and indeed most of that reply - is in direct response to the general sentiment of that comment, stating that it's illogical to find torture, genocide and rape upsetting.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Anon you're addressing here, I see you misunderstood my comment - I didn't mean to say that it's illogical to find torture, genocide and rape upsetting, I meant to say that it's illogical to find rape upsetting and be okay with torture and genocide, which are objectively far worse crimes and which Morgoth (and many more beloved villains, hence why I made it a general statement) have committed.

Well I don't see Eol being a fandom fave.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Maeglin is.
And Eol isn't even a bad guy in that regard, Tolkien himself wrote: "It is not said that Aredhel was wholly unwilling, nor that her life in Nan Elmoth was hateful to her for many years."

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Maeglin is controversial. He's got about as many fans as non-supporters. Eol's case is definitely debatable since it's not in every version of their story that the "not wholly unwilling" line is present - and even if it is, it doesn't change the fact that he used trickery to ensnare Aredhel, whether she knew of it or not.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's in my version and that's good enough for me.
Even if he used trickery, she still married and bed him of her own will. That is not debatable seeing as she would have died otherwise, rape kills elves.

Equating rape with "a grope" = troll. Nice try.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what everyone does nowadays. Aren't you guys screaming "rape!" at Drogo fondling Dany?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know what everyone does nowadays but I see u trollin'

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't think shipping villains together in fluff or whatever means they're not evil. A lot of shippers I see know they're irredeemable, it's incredibly obvious. It's like when people drew fluff of Joker/Harley. A lot of the ship art I see of it are jokey anyways.
