> "the fact that the Old Testament is a horrible book"

That's bad wording on my part, I'm sorry for that.

> I think it's reasonable someone could find it offensive that you called the holy book and the basis of the religion of billions of people "awful" "sick fuckery"

Yeah, sure, I'm not saying it's unreasonable. But that's what my opinion is, and I think I have reasons to hold this opinion, too. I don't see how it can be helped unless somebody tries to persuade me otherwise and thus make my opinion less offensive.

Nope? What I said is that I don't see how my opinion can cease to be offensive/how I can cease to hold offensive opinions unless somebody else gives me arguments against them? Because as it is, I know the topic rather well and I've made my conclusions.

I'm not talking about a social group, I'm talking about a belief. And in any case, as long as a social group is formed based on their beliefs rather than physiology/genetics/psychology, I feel that this is "an okay way" to talk about the group in question. Provided I talk about their views and not them as individuals. Religious people are not like gay/black/mentally ill people. It's a choice, and it's an ideology.

There are good ideologies, and there are bad ideologies. Different people think different things, but unfortunately I don't have a magical argument separating people defending gay marriage from people defending the Old Testament. I just think that gay marriage is good but the Old Testament is bad. Somebody else might feel otherwise. My opinion of them would be pretty low, though.

I think the problem with the gay marriage analogy is that all arguments against gay marriage are ultimately about gay people. They are NOT about gay marriage as an institution. Arguments against the Old Testament, though? Are not about religious people.

eta: but what I said downthread stands. Point taken.

Jewish!Anon Jumps into the Fray

Hello!
I see that you don't really like my holy book. That's fine, I'm used to that. Indeed, many christians I've known don't like it either. However, I don't like the way that you are speaking about my belief system and, more importantly the community of amazing friends and family members I have that hold the Torah close.

You seem to be an athiest, and unless you have been very sheltered or live in a very progressive area, there have been christians who have called your belief system immoral or have told you that you are going to hell.

But truly, I am a believer in peace. And anon, even if you think my religion is full of shit and my holy text is full of sick fuckery, it has taught me to be a a better person.

So have a nice day, and have some peace and love to go. :)

Hi, Jewish!Anon! Thank you for being nice about it. I understand my statement wasn't exactly the epitome of tactfulness.

I'd like to repeat that I was not talking about Judaism as such or, God forbid, Jewish people (seeing as half of my family are Jewish). My opinion is that Judaism is not based on the OT the way a non-religion related ideology would be based on a set of ideological statements (i.e. Fascism, Communism). For the most part, it finds a way to interpret the OT that allows people to ignore the vile parts of the book.

What I do think is that the views of religious Jews are often at odds with what is written in the OT, regardless of what they themselves say about it. And I therefore believe that the way Judaism interprets this text is intellectually dishonest.

Which in no way prevents it from teaching people to be better. So I have zero problems with accepting your statement as regards your relationship with the book.

I am an atheist and I grew up in an area full of Christians. I literally knew no other atheists until I was well into my teens. And yes, I did get told that my ideology was bad and that I would go to Hell. But I think it was wrong of people to say that to me because I was a lonely kid and they were the powerful adult majority, not because nobody should ever insult my beliefs. Plus, telling people that they'll go to Hell has nothing to do with ideologies and everything to do with the speaker's being fucked up in the head.

The people in this thread have actually convinced me that insulting people's intellectual beliefs isn't a good idea unless I'm willing to personally hurt the people in question (which I'm not), and I'd like to apologize to you and to other Jewish&OT Christian folks who might read the thread for my disrespectful treatment of the OT. I still think it's a bad book and Judaism&OT Christianity are intellectually dishonest, but I shouldn't have been rude about it.

Thank you.

This, although I would say it is 99% Abrahamic religions that have adherents who post here.
