It pisses me off when people complain about teenagers dyeing their hair "bad girl" colors like pink or purple. My sister did, and I thought it made her the coolest person in the world. I'm also pretty sure it made me realize I didn't give a rat's ass what anyone thought of my own hair. (Which I never actually styled, I was the other extreme. Now I'm somewhere in between.)

I love pink and purple hair! Never associated it with bad girls or whatever - I just think it's really pretty.

Well, I think it gets associated with "punk" which is supposedly bad. But the thing with my sister was that she was totally the "punk nerd" stereotype, so probably the most "bad" thing she ever did was fail to return a library book. It wasn't like she dyed her hair and then started chain smoking and stuff.

I don't mind those colours in theory, but everyone I've met with pink/purple hair has been pretty obnoxious, so I'm kind of biased against it now.

That's also a pet peeve of mine. I didn't start dyeing my hair bright colors until I was 19, and I was nervous and hesitant at first, but my confidence was actually boosted when the old lady who worked at Sally's Beauty Supply saw what I was buying and condescendingly told me that "when we get to be adults, we have to grow out of that phase." That was when I knew that I had to try it at least once, just out of spite. 9 years later, I cycle between pink, blue and purple (it's blue now), and while I'm definitely doing it for myself because it looks awesome and I have to have at least one thing I like about my appearance, I do smile when I think of how much this would annoy that lady. So, fuck the haters. Your sister is awesome and so are you.

If I could, I'd dye my hair all sorts of wild shades. But sadly my job doesn't allow it.
