I agree with you that it is not as good as Wormtongue, but at the same time, I do not think he is to be the same type of character. The Hobbit has more of a humorous tone to it (which makes sense, as it is more geared towards children), and so that character does, too.

The name problem is strange to me, though. It's just a different spelling of Alfred?
