The name is stupid? It just looks like it could be a nonstandard Romanization of an Anglo-Saxon name...

The name seems to be Alfred just spelt a bit differently, slightly odd but not unheard of*...

*At least not in my part of the woods... Tho probably more likely to be a female name.

He's lame, I agree.

I simply dislike how it's supposed to be cool to like such characters as either of these. I find them repulsive.

I also find it depressing that guy who plays Alfrid was originally slated to play Drogo Baggins, but got diverted into playing a character I find disgusting. I might have liked him if he played Drogo, but now my opinion of him will be coloured by his having played Alfrid instead.

I hope they have someone good-looking for Drogo.

Since when is it cool to like dudes like this? The Gríma fanbase was tiny when I was in it.

Maybe I just frequent places that have a few loud Alfrid or Gríma fans, and see too many people who pahoo the leads simply for being good-looking, like there's something wrong with thinking Thorin is gorgeous.

They cut Drogo and Primula from the movies completely, didn't they?

I can't definitely say, since we have yet to see the third movie. There might be something at the end of the third about Bilbo's life after he returned to the Shire that would include an appearance of Drogo and Primula.

There was a post on TORN that said the prologue to AUJ was supposed to feature Drogo and Primula and then the three film split happened and caused some rearranging... there's been no word of Drogo being recast, though.

I didn't mind him that much, but sometimes it really felt as if PJ was just rehashing LotR whenever he ran out of material (Alfrid/Grima, the Elves having to be convinced to fight, etc.)

WOW I totally forgot that this guy was in the movie. Sorry PJ, guess he wasn't memorable enough for me.

To be fair, Laketown is a podunk village sitting amid the ruins of the once-great city of Dale. It makes sense that everything in Laketown is second-rate, even their obsequious toadies

No, Laketown is a podunk floating village located on the Long Lake, while the ruins of Dale are located in the hills close to the main gate of Erebor. They're not actually the same place, though Laketown is the residence of those people of Dale who didn't pack up and move away entirely.

You are correct, and I see in retrospect that I failed to convey that. I think, however, my point stands.

I agree with you that it is not as good as Wormtongue, but at the same time, I do not think he is to be the same type of character. The Hobbit has more of a humorous tone to it (which makes sense, as it is more geared towards children), and so that character does, too.

The name problem is strange to me, though. It's just a different spelling of Alfred?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Aww, poor Alfrid! I think they're both interesting characters, but in different ways. I get a superficial similarity, but in terms of role in the plot and so on, they're quite different. We don't even know Alfrid's whole story yet. I don't know, I just don't get the impression that PJ and company sat around going, 'Know what this story really needs? A Grima rip-off.'

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Why not? They happily ripped off LOTR for other scenes and characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
They did do so, but they tend to be really obvious in their rip-offs. If he was really intended to be Grima Redux I'd expect any parallels to be really spelled out for the audience, and I don't think there's anything there.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
That is true. Even though Tauriel is basically their original plan for Arwen revisited, there's that (terribly executed) glowy Tauriel scene to match the glowy Arwen of LOTR.

He didn't bother me half as much as Fry did. Don't get me wrong, I love Stephen Fry, but lately all he seems to do is... play Stephen Fry. It totally took me out of whatever scene he was in. I kept waiting for Hugh Laurie to show up in drag.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
I seriously thought, "Holy shit, is that Andrew W.K.?" upon looking at the left picture.

...I kind of wish I hadn't looked it up. :( (he is not Andrew W.K.)

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I stared for a good five minutes before realizing he's the guy that plays King Louis in the BBC's Musketeers. I'll have to look out for him next time I watch the Hobbit.
