I disagree with you about the show taking itself too seriously - it really, really doesn't, as others have pointed out. The reason I like the show is it has a sort of tongue-in-cheek (heh) approach, and you can tell the people who made it a) love the original source material and b) love the horror genre.

I'll concede the flimsy policework, but I've always managed to just handwave it, since the show has a sort of... surreal, almost fairytale feeling to it, like it takes place in an alternate universe.

But it's definitely not for everyone! Not liking something is absolutely okay, and please don't feel pressured by the more "enthusiastic" fans.

I myself have had a similar experience with Game of Thrones - I just don't like it, and no amount of people telling me "BUT IT'S SO GOOD!" is going to make me watch it.
