Looks to me like the problem here are you and not the show? Everybody seems to adore it.

"Everybody else" is usually comprised of idiots, in my experience.

1) this pic is so cute, any excuse to use it is welcome! 2) you are kidding, right? 3) I don't like the show either, but at least I have no reason not to, since contrary to the OP I never watched any episode: does it mean I am next in your target list? Eeeeeee! (shaking in my boots just in case you were being serious, because written communication is not always clear when it comes to irony)

Misfire? Most people hate this show :(

(Anonymous) 2014-04-05 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What, seriously? All the people I know that watch it love it, and all the critics' reviews praise it.

it's rude to pressure people into watching shows they don't like

So I'm not trying to argue you out of your opinion or anything, but are you familiar at all with the official Twitter or Tumblr, or those of the showrunners and actors? I cannot imagine a group of people that takes itself less seriously.

This was my thought. I guess, divorced from the creators and taken solely on its own merits, the show is perfectly serious (other than, like, the cannibal puns), but I wouldn't say it takes itself more seriously than any other non-comedy show on the air.

Excellent, this just showed up on my tumblr dash - exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about:

Well, if you don't like it, you don't like it, and there's nothing you can do. But I have to wonder how far you got if you think it takes itself completely seriously, because there's a lot of dark humor there (even more so in season 2) and a real joy about horror and gore that can make even the most horrible things really fun to watch. I'd have to hear an example of "flimsy excuses" to understand what you mean, and if you're bothered by questionable policework, they're absolutely not trying to make a realistic procedural, so that sort of thing is always going to take a backseat to other story goals. They live in a heightened reality where serial killers actually have interesting motives, so a lot of things are going to be different. I watched about a minute and a half of the pilot when it first aired, went "psh, another angsty profiler, whatever" and turned the channel (it was actually the scene where Beverly interrupts Will's reconstruction and I LOVE THAT SCENE now). But then I kept reading people's raves and gave it another shot. I ended up really liking it the first time through and falling crazy in love by the third. So maybe something like that will happen for you if you ever want to try again? Or not, that's cool, but it has so, so much of those things you like and more.

Yes, I didn't want to watch it to start with because the pilot was pretty but very much "angsty special profiler"...but after seeing some of the jokes and gifs, I gave it another try, and it was terrific. And really, really, darkly funny.

The funny thing is Will Graham is in actuality, probably the base for "angsty profiler" in crime shows!

I was biased against that show from the start. I ADORE the books, have read them many times. and i LOVE the movies (well, RD through Hannibal anyway, even with it's craptastic ending).

So...I was destined to dislike that show anyway. and everything I saw and now everything I'm hearing has made me SO adverse to ever giving it another chance. Though, if they can EVER get Clarice on the show, I MIGHT pop back in, in the vain hope they do that whole story arc for her justice. But I highly doubt it, both in getting her and her story.

Each to their own but I'd never accuse Hannibal of taking itself too seriously. In fact the policework etc is proof of that. It's supposed to be somewhat ridiculous.

Ah, I think I know how you feel. I had some moments where I liked the looks of a fandom, and wanted to be part of it, but then the real media just could not hold my interest. It sucks to get your hopes up and I really think you'll like something and want to like it too, but then it just is not what you thought it would be.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree with you about the show taking itself too seriously - it really, really doesn't, as others have pointed out. The reason I like the show is it has a sort of tongue-in-cheek (heh) approach, and you can tell the people who made it a) love the original source material and b) love the horror genre.

I'll concede the flimsy policework, but I've always managed to just handwave it, since the show has a sort of... surreal, almost fairytale feeling to it, like it takes place in an alternate universe.

But it's definitely not for everyone! Not liking something is absolutely okay, and please don't feel pressured by the more "enthusiastic" fans.

I myself have had a similar experience with Game of Thrones - I just don't like it, and no amount of people telling me "BUT IT'S SO GOOD!" is going to make me watch it.

Like what you like, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I felt a little let down too, OP. Not that I'm a huge Hannibal Lecter fan, but I thought the concept and look of the TV series sounded like something I could really get into and... nope. Everything looks very pretty but the plot and relationships don't do anything for me.

I feel this way too. It's really hard for me to suspend my disbelief while I watch it, and it just gets crazier and crazier.

That said, I've learned to love it for its stupidity. I half wonder if it's actually a black comedy.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here OP. Same here. :(((
