Some self-harm and suicide triggers

Note: if your reply is about how I knew the posts were genuine, I didn't, and don't. If your reply is about how useless the blogs mentioned below are, you're underestimating how big an impact knowing that somebody is checking up on you and actively cares about your status can make, and don't.

When I started on Tumblr, it was pretty much exclusively Glee and suicide/self-harm watch blogs (blogs that reblog other blogs' suicide note posts or other blogs' talking about how badly they want to hurt themselves. So pretty much I spent all my free time checking up on people in their asks to make sure they haven't killed or hurt themselves. By the end of the month, I was so fucking exhausted I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning, because every time my email pinged, I knew it was one of those posts. So I unfollowed every single one of those blogs and never looked back.

You do whatever you need to do. If Tumblr's your fandom happy place, you have an obligation to yourself to unfollow blogs that make you feel negative. (This doesn't mean you send them messages condemning them for the content of their blogs. Then you're the source of negativity, and a jerk.)

Your mental health > Everyone else's mental health

Yep. You can't be responsible for anyone else's choices. You'll kill yourself with worry if you do that.

No one obligated to be your therapist.

Find a licensed professional for that job.

It's human nature to want to help someone who is suffering and not everybody who is suffering is going to go for professional help.

If you've been in a situation where an online friend is feeling suicidal, no one with a conscious is going to sit back and do nothing about it.

No, but they might bloody well want to. I know I've been stuck in a chat more than once with some suicidal person, trying my very best to come acrosss as sympathetic and supportive while saying to myself IRL, "Oh god PLEASE would somebody else come in here and take this off my hands. I am not heartless and truly do not want this person to die, but I cannot relate to their situation at all, I so don't need and didn't ask for this responsibility, and damn them for putting it on me."

Same for me. I've been trying to support and comfort people who felt bullied on tumblr, but it's exhausting for one person. I hate leaving it alone but it came to a point where I felt like shit myself because there were so many people and I can't be there for all of them all the time. It was affecting my real life I had a loss of appetite and was doing bad in school, so I had to just try and tune everything out, sad as it was.
