This is how I have been of late. Unless I know you, if you post more than 3 posts a day about some kind of -ist issue (especially if it involves white, male, cis tears), you are an instant unfollow.

Of course that means I am slowly running out of blogs to follow. It seems like fandom and SJW are becoming the same.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I think it's because I feel like I am being preached at with those posts. Like how if a stranger walks up to you and says, "Excuse me, have you accepted Jesus Christ as your personal lord and savior," most people automatically mentally check out. That's what happens to me.

Unless you sign up for it, no one likes being preached to.

My unfollow policy is three posts that rub me the wrong in total.

Ugh "___ tears" is an instant unfollow for me. I just can't take people who brag about "drinking __ tears" seriously.

I try to keep my blog a positive place. I'll signal boost something to help someone or make a comment about something but most of the time I try to avoid spouting controversial opinions and arguments. I mostly just reblog food at stuff related to my writing.

One mention of tears like that is an unfollow from me, and I'm not even a cis, white, male. It just annoys me. How childish can they be? Why would I want to listen to anything else they had to say?

There are plenty of good reasons to want to avoid these kinds of discussions. It doesn't necessarily say anything about you.

I just don't know how to reconcile what people like you want with what other people want. I'm very much of the "the personal is political" mindset. I don't think you can draw a clear line between "political" and "non-political", so I have a hard time in spaces where we're not supposed to talk about "serious" things. Sometimes I feel like I'm not even allowed to mention my girlfriend in spaces like that because some people interpret that as flaunting the gay lifestyle and that's political. Other times I really want to talk about things like how important How to Train Your Dragon is to me because of how I relate to parts of it because of my disabilities, but some people would tell me that even when I'm being positive, I'm bringing the dreaded social justice into it and that's ruining their fun. I sympathize with them but I also still want to talk about these things, so again, for me it's a problem of trying to reconcile a lot of different preferences.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I don't think anyone has a problem with being positive about things. But there's a bunch of negativity out there, and that's... not why I'm in fandom. If I'm gushing about something I enjoy, and someone comes in and craps all over it, I'm not going to appreciate it. If you come in, agree with me that it's awesome, and add the perspective that it speaks to you personally because Reasons, that's fine. :)

Also, I share your love for How to Train Your Dragon.

I avoid those posts simply because it gets exhausting after a while. I go online to relax and talk about silly fandom things, not get political.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I do the same thing. If I see too much SJW stuff on someone's blog, I'll just unfollow them, especially if they're a dickwad about it. I don't get onto Tumblr for peoples' views on human rights.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
i got sick of fandom for the opposite reason, i was sick of fandom showing their asses especially when black women characters were concerned. it's much more relaxing ignoring fandom all together and avoiding twop (rip), show related hashtags and most other fandom related shit.

the whole SJ thing makes me roll my eyes in general because i feel the antis are just as bad as the so-called SJWs. the antis and the white girl SJWs would just eat each other.

Some self-harm and suicide triggers

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-04-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Note: if your reply is about how I knew the posts were genuine, I didn't, and don't. If your reply is about how useless the blogs mentioned below are, you're underestimating how big an impact knowing that somebody is checking up on you and actively cares about your status can make, and don't.

When I started on Tumblr, it was pretty much exclusively Glee and suicide/self-harm watch blogs (blogs that reblog other blogs' suicide note posts or other blogs' talking about how badly they want to hurt themselves. So pretty much I spent all my free time checking up on people in their asks to make sure they haven't killed or hurt themselves. By the end of the month, I was so fucking exhausted I didn't want to get out of bed in the morning, because every time my email pinged, I knew it was one of those posts. So I unfollowed every single one of those blogs and never looked back.

You do whatever you need to do. If Tumblr's your fandom happy place, you have an obligation to yourself to unfollow blogs that make you feel negative. (This doesn't mean you send them messages condemning them for the content of their blogs. Then you're the source of negativity, and a jerk.)

Yeah. I follow so few people because I'm so tired of this stuff.

Now I've realized that a lot of the people that follow me do nothing but reblog this stuff and I am terrified for the day I do something that sets them off. I mean now I rarely even post comments on my art. If I do go to make a text post I labor over it for at least 30 minutes.

I mean shit I even deleted this post once and started over.

You're not the only one, OP. The thing about the SJ side of tumblr is that it can be very emotionally draining, and if fandom is supposed to be a fun thing for you to do online, then it's okay not to want to get involved in that side of things.

Also sometimes you follow people who seem cool but then their blogs slowly morph into something you don't want. I remember I followed this person's personal tumblr (we had RPed with each other for a while) and while she was a really good RPer, her personal blog revealed her to be a radical vegan who called omnivores "bloodmouths" and I just couldn't hit "unfollow" fast enough.

I... can't say as I feel sorry for you?

A lot of people who create fanworks are themselves in oppressed minorities, and it makes perfect sense to me that they'd want to be able to talk about that on their personal blogs.

I get really turned off when I see that someone I followed for fandom reasons posts anti-SJ stuff, because to me, it means they lack a certain amount of empathy or understanding for those in other circumstances, and because it hurts to see other women blanket bashing feminism-- you know, that thing that allowed us to vote and to not spend our fertile years barefoot and pregnant, and all that good stuff.

You don't have to be angry at all (white cismen or whatever) to want social equality. And I get that it hurts if you're scrolling through a blog and liking the things someone posts and feeling a rapport with them only to get hit with a statement like 'there are no good white people*', but the thing you have to remember is that those things come from a place of deep hurt and continued abuse, and as long as you don't contribute to that, and as long as you don't then reply to say 'WE'RE NOT ALL LIKE THAT, YOU KNOW', then they aren't actually talking about you, and you can let that go. And if it really bothers you, then don't follow them.

Heck, you don't have to follow ANYONE from your fandom if you don't want to, you can just check the tags! I'm not promising there won't be social justice in the posts and I don't want to, frankly. But it will 'save' you from the personal thoughts and feelings of the people whose fanworks you enjoy.

*replace with your socially privileged group of choice

Depends for me. There's a few people I follow who post SJ things and some of them I actually find interesting, articles and such and actual interesting discussion. I don't mind those. But then you get some of the really frothing at the mouth stuff and that's when I start unfollowing. Like one that I came across the other day was some stupid post that said something like "Trans people are so special. They should be protected. If you're cis and you don't reblog this for all your cis friends to see then you don't really care about protecting trans people" and I was so tempted to just reblog it with the text deleted and the word "NO" in big letters because it bugged me so much. You are not affecting any kind of meaningful social change by making people reblog a post, stop acting like you are. That kind of SJ shit is what annoys me, because it does no real world good and is just basically people patting themselves on the back for how *diverse* and *enlightened* they are.

Sam here, OP. I wish people would get it through their heads that it's completely possible to like, approve of or agree with a thing, and still not want to see it plastered all over everything in sight ALL THE DAMN TIME.

In the case of the SJ crowd, it's made worse by the fact that 90% of what I see is people behaving just as hatefully (or more) as the dirtbag oppressors they're denouncing.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
I can handle people doing a review of something and saying I think this part was sexist/racist/homophobic.

But when they take it up as a crusade and go around... 'everyone should feel this way about this and boycott this piece of shit work' and picking fights with people who like the thing that I'm just like "instant unfollow"

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get angry at them, but I do unfollow people who reblog too much unreflected SJW stuff. I'm cool with people reblogging or posting well-researched and thought out articles or opinions, but there's a line between that and being a screaming asshat. I also don't go for black and white thinking (also known as "if you disagree with me you're a white male cishet or have internalized an -ism" or "all X are scum").

And sometimes, I just want my fandom squee. Because yes, I want to ignore all the "issues" with something. I'm faced with several -sims and forms of oppression on an almost daily basis, and fandom is my escape. It's my happy place where the real world can stay outside for a while. And if you come into my fandoms' tags and start making a huge stink about something, I will put you on ignore. Which is actually a very good way to turn your followed tags into a happy place again. Just ignore anyone who posts SJ stuff of the kind you dislike, because if they do it once, they're prone to do it again. I do the same thing with people who post hate in the tags.
