(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 01:03 am (UTC)(link)At least with fanart, the artist won't usually post it to their tumblr/myspace/dA acoount without a watermark or the commissioner's permission. Commissioned fanfic is usually just given a notation "This was commissioned by X" or "This was X's request from XY&Z charity fic-a-thon" and then the fic gets whored out to ff.net/ao3/lj etc. In my experience, if you're lucky, the author will finish a piece all at once and post it, but if you're unlucky, the author will piecemeal it and finish it based on reviews, even though the fic was already paid for.
Can you tell I'm bitter? I'm bitter. I keep trying to tell myself at least it was for charity, but I felt so screwed over, I didn't even bother giving prompts to the other writers I had won fic from because I just felt let down by this one author (who was my favorite author at the time...no more).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 06:46 am (UTC)(link)I did try to contact the author a couple of times. Once to let her know I was reading and looked forward to her working on my fic and then again a couple more times to let her know I was still interested in seeing the conclusion. What really annoys me though is that she got special permission from the mods of the drive to offer "second-chance" offers so she took on not just those who won, but those who came in second/third in the bids as well. I just don't know how to confront her without coming off as an asshole at this point, because I guess I should be happy money went to a great charity in the end and it probably makes me look selfish to get something out of it. IDK. But, I'm not the only one she's done this to.
I feel like she would have been working on it though if it had been s popular fic. I asked for her to write an uncommon idea as a prompt for me because that's what I wanted to read.
I just needed to rant about this. I'd be willing to commission fic over fanart, but I haven't had the greatest experience with it. I think I'll be sticking to zines in the future.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 07:15 am (UTC)(link)Whereas in your case with fanfiction, there isn't really any recourse for you. Fic commissions are so uncommon and as a result aren't really taken as seriously by anyone. If you posted a public comment somewhere shaming the author for ripping you off (something which there are actual forums for when it comes to fanart!), you'd be unlikely to get the same "Shun the scammer!" reaction as you would if it was about a fanart commission.
I don't blame you for being put off! No-one likes paying for a product that they didn't receive, and if that author had been a commissioned artist rather than writer, you can bet she would've been blacklisted by now. Shit sucks. :(
