I started as a fanartist and changed to fanfic. I agree that doing fanfic takes longer.

My fanart used to take me 1 day - 3 weeks to make, depending on the piece. Usually about 3 days for a sketch. That's including finding sources, research etc. Larger colour piece with backgrounds etc, would take a couple of weeks.

I can do a short quick scrappy fic in about 8 hours, eg for an anon meme, perhaps 500-1500 words. Longer, thought out fic takes me months, if not years. The longest I worked on one fic continuously was over 6 hours per day for 6 weeks. It nearly killed me. Literally, my immune system went down. That ended up about 15,000 words, which isn't even that long. Other fics I've worked on here and there for years.

I can't say that fanart was more expensive than fanfic as I already had all the art equipment, since I was an art student. I had to buy a laptop to write the fanfic (I used the school computers for my art). So fanfic was a lot more expensive for me.

Fanart is definitely more physically demanding than writing. Drawing for many hours a day is actually quite tough. My body would ache each time. I had a summer job as a cleaner once and I'd put drawing on a par with that. Drawing gives you muscles! Perhaps I was doing it wrong.
