I'm very upset and pretty disgusted that, of the comments in this thread regarding the comparison of fanart vs fanfic and monetizing it, no one has considered the amount of time and research that goes into writing a fanfic. I'm not an artist, but I can guarantee you that I've spent more time researching and writing some fic than artists have spent drawing and coloring many of their creations.

I don't believe that either should be sold for money, but I cannot believe some of the posts that have been made in this thread.

I worked on one fanfic for over 5 years (it was a long plotty genfic thing), and even my short fics take at minimum a month to complete. On the other hand, I have never spent more than two weeks on a piece of fanart. So yeah, I'm surprised nobody's pointed this out.

DA

Same here.
Writing a 50k fic can take me a year or more and that's not counting research (when needed) + editing.

Another anon agreeing with this.

Whenever I see a fanartist going "OMG this took me three days to make!!!!"

I look at how many months it takes me to write my novel length fics, and I just want to say, "Oh, child, you have no idea."

well researching for art is a lot different than researching for a fic. Anatomy, color theory, perspective, all of those things go into drawing a picture, all of them are research to create a better work. OF course you can say the same thing about writing, but when you look at a picture you can immediately see what's wrong with it by glancing at the work. So I'd say the research is probably a lot more equal than you'd think.

I also don't think either should be sold.

I started as a fanartist and changed to fanfic. I agree that doing fanfic takes longer.

My fanart used to take me 1 day - 3 weeks to make, depending on the piece. Usually about 3 days for a sketch. That's including finding sources, research etc. Larger colour piece with backgrounds etc, would take a couple of weeks.

I can do a short quick scrappy fic in about 8 hours, eg for an anon meme, perhaps 500-1500 words. Longer, thought out fic takes me months, if not years. The longest I worked on one fic continuously was over 6 hours per day for 6 weeks. It nearly killed me. Literally, my immune system went down. That ended up about 15,000 words, which isn't even that long. Other fics I've worked on here and there for years.

I can't say that fanart was more expensive than fanfic as I already had all the art equipment, since I was an art student. I had to buy a laptop to write the fanfic (I used the school computers for my art). So fanfic was a lot more expensive for me.

Fanart is definitely more physically demanding than writing. Drawing for many hours a day is actually quite tough. My body would ache each time. I had a summer job as a cleaner once and I'd put drawing on a par with that. Drawing gives you muscles! Perhaps I was doing it wrong.

The fic I wrote for Sherlockmas, around 8500 words, took 20 hours. That was really fast for me. Anything that requires research, like case fic, takes much longer.

Originally, artists charged for fanart to cover the costs of their materials - it wasn't about fic taking longer than art.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
anon above

When I did fanart I didn't have to buy any extra materials as I already was an art student and I used what I had. I used other people's scanners/computers to get the fanart on the net. Scanning/uploading only took 20 minutes or so.

When I changed to fanfic I had to buy a computer, get an internet connection. There's no way I could book the hundreds of hours plus I needed to write fanfic on the school's computers.

So shouldn't fanficcers like me, by that argument, have been the ones to charge money?

That claim never made much sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's not a very logically sound argument, though. I write fic on my ipod, which was a gift, and I draw fanart on my sister's hand-me-down tablet and laptop, so by that same logic, no one should be charging for either because it's all free.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 04:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. My point is that it's a weak argument to start with.

Fanartists charge for their commissions because they can, pure and simple. There's no logic involved. Or else the same standards would apply to all fanworks that involved expense.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
Why should anyone? It's not about effort. It's about legality.
