Yeah, I'm going to just be echoing a lot of the comments here already, but I'm not fond of her either. I don't hate her, but I'm more interested in almost every other character on the show, and it irritates me that she was made a regular when more interesting (to me) characters like Red/Ruby got shoved to the side.

Part of it I think is the actress. I really don't think Emilie de Ravin was the best choice for that role. I remember liking her as Tess on Roswell (up until she killed Alex but that's another story) so I don't think it's necessarily that she's a bad actress. It's just that this wasn't the part for her. Then again, it's kind of a thankless role. She's basically just Rumplestiltskin's conscience, and her character pretty much just revolves around him. I find her more interesting when she's not with him, like the episode where she went monster hunting with Mulan, but honestly even then she's not a favorite.

I can't really fault her for "Rumple" though. What else would you call him? I can't think of any other shortening of that name that makes sense.

Didn't the actress that plays Red/Ruby get a show of her own? Or a pilot? I don't think she was pushed aside.

She was pushed aside - that's why she took the Intelligence role. Not by Belle necessarily - it just happened that Belle, as Rumpelstiltskin's "true love", fit more conveniently into their plans. It's been confirmed in interviews (sorry, I don't have the links) that they originally had a lot more planned for her in season two, but then they started developing the Peter Pan/Neverland arc, and the stuff for her went out the window.

Hmm. I thought I read it the other way, that they had to change what was planned because she left for that other show.

Maybe not. I don't recall.

Oh well.

It couldn't be, because they started developing the Neverland arc long before she was cast.

A lot of what they had originally planned for the back half of season two didn't end up happening because when they got the Neverland/Peter Pan rights they tossed it and started working on that. There was supposed to be a lot more to the Mulan/Aurora/Phillip story for example, but that also just got dropped cold. It wasn't just Red's arc, but since she's my favorite character I'm a little more bitter over her than the others. And it doesn't help that I hated Neverland.

I'll be over here being a grumpypants about the Mulan/Aurora thing. I wanted that to happen, dang it!

Mulan/Aurora was never going to happen in season two, whether they got the rights to Neverland or not. Their original plan in S2 involved Mulan being in love with Phillip, not Aurora. That much is confirmed in interviews from season two. That's the arc that would have happened had the writers not gotten distracted by Neverland.

The season THREE scene implying Mulan being in love with Aurora instead very coincidentally (sarcasm alert) came after a summer break during which there was at least one and maybe more incidents with the Swan Queen shippers and them calling the writers homophobic. So, apparently they looked around to find another ship to throw a (very small) bone to. And at this stage it's looking like there were never any intentions for it to be anything more than that, in spite of what was said after that episode aired. It's confirmed that Mulan will not be appearing for the rest of the season, and I've heard that Sarah Bolger has said at a con, while confirming the Mulan/Aurora implications of that scene, that there were never any plans to break Phillip and Aurora up.

Ah, that explains a lot. I was curious about whether they were actually going to be able to go with Peter Pan because of the copyright issues. Ironically the Pan storyline was bloody awful.
