So the first anime was released concurrently with the manga. Eventually it caught up and just sort of had to make up its own plot to keep going, so it diverged entirely from manga canon. Brotherhood was a later remake that followed manga canon. I've only read the manga so I can't really say whether the first or second anime was better, but the manga is one of my favorites! And yeah I don't really know about the movies.
